Has anyone done this?...

I just had the idea today to cut the CL shifter down a bit and put a new TL knob on it, shorten it down a bit as it's so dern tall, has anyone tried this

It'll fit if it's the same diameter. I wouldn't suggest cutting the rod, you'll lose the threads, and thus, no shifter will fit. The stock shift knob is easily removed, just be careful with the spring inside.

you can cut the shifter down and rethread it and I believe people used to cut the bottom part to retain the threads. Oh i have a 2nd Gen TL knob really cheap since the threads are stripped but if you cut the threads off it doesnt matter haha

Is there some way I can bypass that? maybe a spring on the knob that you push down on to release?

You can bypass it if you modify the spring to be compressed 100% of the time, however, I'd hate to see what happens when you bump the shifter going 65 and go from D4 to R.

That would make it easier to steal your car without a key too.

Mythbusters busted the Drive to Reverse at high speeds... and I freaked myself out one day with that in my accord. Went to shift it into neutral to coast down the huge hill since i was low on gas and it went into Reverse but.. didn't actually go into reverse. There is some sort of safety mechanism that does not allow it to actually change to reverse. Just like how you can only grind reverse in a manual when you are going forward too fast.

Edit: Park on the other hand... I know if you are driving reasonably slow and hit it into park it will make a god awful gear hopping noise. Friend of mine used to do that in the G loaner infiniti would give him since he hated auto... It would CLACK CLACK CLACK until it stopped.
