You can do well with both, the custom you do well because you specify what parts you want on it, the built kits you get tuned exhaust setups. Personally I went with custom cuz I wanted to pick all my own pieces

You won't pass emissions with no cat (assuming your state has emission testing)

Depends on what you're trying to do to your exhaust.

To do a full exhaust setup like I'm doing, you'll need the following:

Headers, High Flow Cat or B-Pipe, Muffler, Resonator (optional) and custom piping. The muffler is really up to you as far as what you want to have sticking out the back of your car, there aren't many options for headers for our cars, just don't get megan.

people have had good luck with SS Autochrome headers. sometimes you need to replace the flex pipe (exhaust shop can do that) but for $100 you can't do much better. http://www.ssautochrome.com/

Random Tech for the high flow cat.

Unless you want it real loud put a resonator in - Magnaflow, the bigger the better

Mufflers are up to you - how you want it to sound...

you got the stainless 2.5 inch piping right. Any more and you loose torque.

If this is the same as the XS headers, I've been checking out the thread for it & it says that the bolts that come with it need to be replaced due to the originals not being heat treated. Oh, & yeah the flex pipe issue can be adressed as you mentioned. There was also mention about applying wrap to the flex pipe as well. For the price for 'em, I think it's a good deal to get the extra hp...

ah sorry didn't see you were a 1st gen...doh. you are correct about the good deal on the xs headers. you will probably have some flex pipe issues and definitely get new bolts. Just take what you will from the XS owner thread. I would say since you are getting such a good deal on the headers, don't be cheap and wrap them just have the flex pipe replaced. More reliable and longer lasting...

I have Megan headers and they are doing perfectly fine.
What's up with this $88.00 though!

my personal expierience with exhaust is this.

i bought a Greddy Sp2 which is a quiet exhaust but still sounds good. the muffler looks cool and is always shiny. i always get complements on the shine.

so then i got an omni power straight pipe which really made me satisfied with the sound. and not to mention the exhaust popping and rumbling on downshifts also made it worth it.

everyone thinks straight pipes make your car sound ricey, but i can assure you when i had my F22 it didnt. as long as you have a typically quiet muffler and a resonator, a straight pipe wont make your car sound like the average civic.

my .02

my friend has the hks carbon fiber ti on his prelude, and yes, im aware its very loud.

so im thinking, xs headers, get the heat treated bolts, 2.5 inch mandrel bent stainless, 22 inch magnaflow res, and hks ti? does that sound good?

or maybe the dc header if i have enough $$$. apexi afc neo first though so i can save gas, therefore saving money, to get the exhaust faster.

That's the right price or somewhere thereabouts! XS headers are a cheap..oops, sorry folks, inexpensive way of getting some decent hp. I was thinking of getting them as well since they are so affordable . However, there are some issues that come with that price so better yet to check out the xs owner's thread on the site to see what the lowdown is.... I've been lurking there a few times already so will most likely order mine real soon!
