ok, i bought a used 97 3.0 cl and have a few problems and was wondering if anybody could help me with them...

1) sometimes i sit in the car for a couple hours with the engine off, but the radio and/or aircon on..occassionally, the lights will start to dim and the windows go REALLLY slow, then when i try to start the car, it just clicks...then when i come back to the car a few hours later, it starts perfectly fine with no delay or dimming,, do i need a new battery?

2)when it gets cold out and i havent been in the car for the while, the car often has problems starting..it seems to have enough electricity, but it just makes that high pitched sound and the engine starts maybe 5-10 seconds later, if i turn the engine off and start it again, it goes immediately..im worried that when it gets real cold, my car wont start at all, anyone have ideas??

 

To answer your first question. No you dont need a new battery, however if you continuse to let it set like that you will eventually need a new one. What your doing is running the surface charge off the battery. Eventually it wont be able to hold a charge anymore. On a side note, i didn't know you could run the AC w/o the engine running???

Your second question...hmmm does it sound like the starter is grinding or what? Also how cold is it there? Sometimes if you turn your car to the "on" position for a few seconds then crank your engine some people say it helps.

thanks for your response..ok the sound the car makes when it doesnt start immediately is kind of hard to describe, but its like the sound the car normal makes for a split second before the engine vrooms..its like a high pitched i guess, "electrical" sounding screech..i dont know how to explain but it sounds like the car is struggling..but thanks for your tip, ill try that and hopefully i dont get stuck in the middle of nowhere..

 

And if you do then you at least have roadside assistance

You cant. You can leave it on but the cold air wont come out after a few minutes.

I dont think you can use the heater with the engine off either...

Haha I dont think you can either. But i gotta ask again why would you sit in your car for hours w/o the engine running but the heat on.
