Here are the engine codes for a 2.3...I was having the exact same problem with my car, the CEL came on and the VTEC was not working. It was throwing P1259 which is VTEC malfunction and the car was low on oil. I never did get to figure out what was wrong with that engine because it was under warranty, so I got a new one....but the main issue if you're getting that code is that the oil is going somewhere; either out the tailpipe or on the ground. There are other warning codes besides 1259 that will point to the solenoid being the problem.
As far as the brake light, check your fluid level, and be prepared to add some.

How did you clean the vtec solenoid? Can you take a pic of it for me? Or can someone take a pic of its location please? Thanks a lot!

yesterday i cleaned out the VTEC solenoid.. hoping that works.... IT DID..for 20 mins....half way to work this morning the light came on and my frustration skyrocketed!... anyone know how to fix this problem??
sidenote... i also put a lil more oil in the car thinking that may also be the case... that didnt do much either

anywho... all i did was unbolt it and use some brake cleaner to clean it out.. but i had no clogs or anything of the sort.
i beleive the problem of my Vtec is a huge dent in my oil pan!.. i havent gotten around to fixing it cause i dont feel like leaving my car at my dads shop and driving another car with no sound system, not lowered, no rims and not in pimp status....
but i also got some DC headers that i would be dropping in pretty soon so when i do that ill change the oil pan at the same time.
update on your issue?
