CD Changer for 99CL
CD Changer for 99CL
This might top the list of stupid questions, but what aftermarket CD changers are compatible with the Bose system in a 1999 2.3CL? A related question, how do you take out the stock head unit to see the back?

There have been threads on how to get to the head unit on the '98/'99 model. Try doing a search by usng the "Search" button at the top right of your screen.

The OEM 6-CD changer is made by Alpine. You may want to start there. Good Luck!
well seeing how dustbuster is a lazy ass...
I'll elaborate on that question for you.
I believe the best way to go, while keeping the stock headunit is to add the alpine CHM-S630 6 disc changer by means of an adapter that plugs into the back of the headunit. The adapter is about $20-$30 and can be found at best buy, circuit city...etc. This alpine changer sounds better than the Acura changer and can be found new for the same price, if not less than the Acura one used. With the adapter, the alpine changer will be controled from the stock deck, just like the factory changer would be.
To get to the back of the stock deck, the only tool you will need is a philips screw driver. Start by taking all your stuff out of the center console, including the cd holder at the bottom. Under that there will be 2 screws that need to be removed. Take the cupholder out by pulling up on it, and you will find one screw by itself at an angle... remove that too. With those screws out, the armrest part of the console will be loose... with the e-brake on (to make it easier), slide the console up and out of the way.
Pull out the ash tray, there will be one screw behind there that needs to be taken out. Then where the arm rest part of the console meets the shifter console there should be 2 screws holding the wood trim down... remove them.
Now the wood trim should be free (if you have a manual tranny, remove the shift knob by pulling down on the chrome trim on the boot, then unscrew the shift knob with your hand), pull up on the trim and it should pop out... then there are a couple harnesses to be unplugged from the back of the switches and clock.
With the trim out of the way, a look under the stereo and pocket will reveal the 2 screws that hold it in, remove them and the stereo will come out.
I hope this helps you out.

I'll try to get the head unit out and then I'll see if the CHM-S601 that I just happen to have laying around the garage will work - any ideas about that? I'd hate to take the dash all apart and to buy a $30 adapter only to find out that the old one doesn't work. However, then at least I'd have everything ready to get the CHM-S630....now I've gotta print out Simkid's instructions. I'll report back when I find out more.....
...wow - I just got done installing the Alpine CHM-S601 - what an easy install - about an hour, start to finish and going slow so as to not break the wood trim!!
Thanks for all the help - I would never had been able to do this without the detailed description provided by Simkid. I hope I can return the favor sometime.
