cars overheating...

hey guys hope all is well....the other day i was driving to autozone to pick up something and as i put the car to park the temp. needle shoots up above mid line. i step outside and i see coolant on the ground...i take it home asap and i checked out the radiator and i didnt see any leak...however, the coolant tank was overflowing with coolant...and i havent poured any coolant for the past yr...now my question is, is this a bad water pump or a thermosat? cuz recently i have been hearing some whining noise from the alternator area...im not sure what it is...any input????/

sounds like the thermostat, they go bad on our CL's all the time, but the belt whining could be indicitive of a pulley problem with the water pump, I would check the thermostat first though

Sounds like a stuck thermostat. When was the last time it was changed? Was the whining there before it overheated?

Check your hoses while you are at it.

on this same topic. When my radiator went last week, it was almost empty, I saw the leaking fluid filled it up and havent had a problem since. I figure it just plugged itself, but I am still somehow confused.

Same thing happens with my car, something is wrong with the fan or a sensor somewhere, even the thermostat is probably gone too. It'll overheat if I drive a long time and stop on the highway, I just turn up my heat for a temp fix right now until spring.
