brake questions
History:
Front rotors turned
Pads OK
Rear rotors turned
pads replaced
Done at local Firestone. This is for a '97 2.2CL with 48000 miles (bought with 40000 miles). When son applies brakes the front (I think) makes a grabbing/rubbing noise as more pressure is applied. Took car back, they found nothing wrong. I will be returning the car this weekend - my thought is one of the rotors is not true/turned properly. Any one else have an opinion? They charged $65/rotor to turn because of difficulty to remove. I expect to have a smotth brake feel when braking, either hard or soft. What do new rotors cost? Tahnks inadvance for the comments.

My first thought is that if the front pads were not replaced, their surface has worn similarly (unevenly) to the rotors. Therefore you may have an uneven surface on the pads attemtping to "mate" with the smooth (even) surface of the turned rotor.
If the rotors required resurfacing, then the pads probably need changing.

Thanks for the reply. That was my first question when they did the brakes. Was told the pads were wearing evenly and had plenty of surface left. When the brakes grab/rub it happens periodically as if associated with the revolution of the wheel; not constant which leads me to believe the rotors are not true.

Personally, I just change the rotor instead of having them turned. I have yet to have an evenly turned rotor (especially if they DON'T turn the rotor while on the car).
From what you just described, I'd say it's the rotor.

I'm not sure what the dealer would charge, but the labor is very high for the '97 rotor design.
List price is $70.38 each!

The labor for replacing the front rotors is the majority of the cost. I had mine replaced from a friend at his shop. He said it took him about half a day for both. Depends on who you get to do it but if you don't know anyone, expect to pay at least $200 for the labor

I just paid $226 to totally replace 2 front Rotors with Pads on my 98 3.0. I had mine done at Belle Tire which I'm not sure if they are located outside of Michigan. Everyone else wanted to charge close to $300 and over.
