MDX Propeller Shaft Question

Hey Acura aficionados,

I have a question regarding the propeller shaft on my MDX: For lack of more eloquent diction, what the heck is it? I took in my MDX to the dealership for a Rear Differential Fluid change and while they were performing the job they allegedly inspected the chassis and concluded that this component needs replacing. For those who don't know what it is either here's a diagram of the part: http://www.acurapartswarehouse.com/P...gPicture=False

They quoted me $900 for the part alone () so I would like to know if you guys could help explain what exactly a propeller shaft does and what are some of the symptoms of a kaput example? If the propeller shaft DOES indeed have to come out then I'll procure my parts from some other source and take the MDX to an independent mechanic but I would like to know if the dealer's discovery was simply malarkey intended to make me fork over my hard-stolen money..

Thanks in advance!

the propeller shaft is only replaced when it is damaged or making noise, like for instance the RL gets a rumbling/whining noise at 40+ MPH and acura said to replace the propeller shaft to cure the issue.

I'd call the dealer up and ask them why did they suggest it be replaced if you didn't make a complaint. Was it damaged?

That looks like a drive shaft? Is that what it is?
