Erratic RPM's

2007 MDX with about 145K miles. My wife has been driving on the highway and she said a few times the RPM's have been going up to 5000 while doing 70-75 mph (usually 2000-2500). She said the engine sounded normal and no codes are present. Has only happened a few times in the last few weeks.

Anyone else seen this?

Thanks,

How long ago (time / mileage) was the last time you changed the tranny fluid?

it literally can be anything, with the limited amount of details....

it could be a transmission slip...

Whenever the MM message came up. Less than 2 years and about 20K miles.

I haven't been in the MDX when this happened. I asked if the engine was louder than normal. At 5K rpm's you should notice the sound. She said no everything was normal except the tach at 5K. She drove to work when this happened on her way home it was normal (about 30 miles each way).

Not having any messages or codes is not helping. I was thinking maybe the transmission pressure switches but doing some searches it looks like they throw a code.

If the driver doesn't know how easy it is to pull the shiftier towards them, after they put in in to Drive, they'll never know that they are in "manual" 3rd gear.

No engine rev, according to wife, could tach be acting up on it's own, seems unlikely...

Tell her to drive a littke fast, or drive it yourself... Try all different combinations of throttle/gear to see if problem can be replicated...

Her comment was "I think the needle is stuck" I really doubt it as well.

I will probably try 3 x 3 trans oil change and try to get as much fresh fluid in the system to see if this helps.

maybe she bumped into Manual mode accidently by knocking the gear shift over? Replacing pressure switches is also a good idea along with the 3x3. Be sure to check the color of the fluid too! If the radiator fails, coolant and ATF can mix spelling disaster for the trans!!!

Did the 3x3 trans oil change. Old fluid had about 22k miles and was still dark red. See how it goes.
