2012 Oil Consumption

First let me start off by saying the MDX in question is not mine but rather, my mom's and I very rarely drive it however I do like to keep tabs on it. Recently I'd taken to checking the oil on all of our cars every month or so and the last two times I've checked the MDX, it's been down a quart. I'll need to go through her records for the exact mileage of the last oil change so I can get the rate of consumption but I had to add one when the oil life was at 60% and it's down one quart again tonight with the MID at 40%.

My mom is a very gentle driver...the 5-under-the-limit type nobody wants to get behind so I don't think she's moonlighting as a drag racer. Neither the RL or my Elantra ever consume a drop in between oil changes so I'm starting to think there is something wrong with the engine in the MDX.

Any ideas?

I havent experienced this yet with the mdx but my 2009 tl awd would eat oil at times, mostly during the summer with the higher temps and ac running.

I use about 1/2 quart between M.I.D. oil changes in my MDX. I just switched to Mobil 1 just to see if there would be a difference. I would think anything more than 1 1/2 - 2 quarts between changes would be out of specs? Unless you have +50,000 miles; you still have the basic bumper-to-bumper and the 70,000 mile powertrain warranties. Both my TSX and RDX might use 1/8 of a quart between changes and they both have +110,000 miles (both Mobil 1). I would let the dealership know about the problem to keep a record of it and then monitor how much oil is being used between M.I.D. changes.

you are not first with oil consumption problems... J37 engines are know for oil consumption, not all of them but some likes to drink oil.
Mine is 2012, no oil burning. And i drive like crazy...

Yes, ours consumes a quart very 3,000 miles, very disappointed. Dealer said that Acura considers up to 1 qt every 1,000 miles "normal" which is BS and bad PR. Dealer offered to do a leakdown test to "document" results. Very pissed that a 50k vehicle consumes oil. All previous H or A cars NEVER consumed oil.

Not entirely true. Preludes with the B21 motor and early S2000's consumed oil too. I've owned both.

I should have qualified as The Ones I have owned including our 2004 S2000

Been keeping an eye on this and it's going through a quart every 2,500 miles or so. Not the result we were hoping for but at the moment, there seems to be no recourse.

So an interesting change in my MDX oil consumption. It is primarily driven by my wife, her work commute is about 2 miles each way driven very easily and we usually take two road trips per year where I can really get my foot into it engaging Vtec many times

Just returned from taking two 400 mile road trips with a total of 6 adults on first trip and four adults on second trip, drove aggressively on both trips 70-90 mph and engaging Vtec many times.

Before each trip, checked to make sure oil was at top of hash mark, also rechecked upon return and NO oil consumption. I think my rings have finally fully seated. Vehicle only has 12k miles and it has also been noted that these engines need to be driven hard to seat the rings.....I think I am there!
