2012 Acura MDX - Differential Fluid Change Interval

I always perform services when the MID displays the corresponding code. So far, the MID has displayed code 6 (differential fluid change) at the following mileages:

38,500
53,900
91,000

Recently, the MID prompted me for an A1 service at 135,000 miles, but still no prompt for code 6, so it has now been 44,000 since it last prompted me to change the differential fluid. This seems excessive and has me concerned. Any had a similar experience?

I tend to follow the MID as well. If recommend noting it cause it may come in the next service. If it doesn't,go ahead and do it for piece of mind.

2012 Acura MDX - Early Maintenance Minder Counter Reset Possible?

Several months ago, I brought my car into the dealer to have a tire patched, and while patching the tire, they reset the Maintenance Minder. I have no idea why they did this, and I complained, because I was at 20% oil life. If I had not noticed, I could have gone almost twice the mileage between oil changes. It also made me wonder if any of the other maintenance counters had been affected. Since all of this happened, I have noticed that I have not been prompted to replace the differential fluid, and it has been at least 44k miles which seems excessive. Obviously, the dealer resets the Maintenance Minder after each oil change, but that does not stop the reminders for the other services such as spark plugs, etc. which have much higher mileage intervals. Does anyone know if the Maintenance Minder counters can be reset prematurely?

Moderator Hat On: Please do not open several threads for different subjects that can be addressed on 1 thread! only use one thread for all your concerns in the future.

No, MID Reset ONLY resets the Oil Change Reminder. It wont reset any sub items covered by the ODOMETER!.

I've merged your threads to make it a bit clearer!

You can reset the Maintenance Minder system ITEM BY ITEM with Honda Diagnostic System (HDS). You can buy a copy from ebay for around $100. Otherwise it's resetting via the MID that will tell you what other services are recommended during the reset and will then reset some of the items, hence your top post! During that reset the car would have displayed a diff change and other codes that were then reset.

Do the diff fluid and reset the maintenance minder system during your next oil change or with HDS:

You can see in this video A123 when he resets while at 30% with no codes displayed originally:

Thus your dealer would have reset whatever popped up that time.

That looks about right, except for the last one. In my experience 6 appears every 30-35K miles.

Thanks for the input, everyone, and apologies for the multiple posts. I did not want to add confusion by throwing too much detail / too many questions into one post. Based on your responses, I doubt the dealership would have gone to the trouble to use the HDS method, so it was likely a case of the tech resetting the MID out of habit. It brings up an interesting question regarding people who change their oil every 3,000 miles instead of waiting for the MID to alert for an oil change, because the dealership puts that little sticker on their windshield. If the tech resets the MID every 3,000 miles and the MID reset clears ALL codes that are present, it seems highly likely that these people could be missing a lot of services. Am I missing something here?

I found the answer on the CurryAcura.com website. If you do any maintenance "early", you need to do all the maintenance items that are currently due according to the MID. If you reset the MID, you will reset the counters for all pending items. See quote from the website below. It would be nice if it were easier to see all pending services without having to go into the MID reset screen. Seems like it would just be another sub-menu.

Q: I change my own oil. Should I reset the light?
A: The Acura Maintenance Minder is not just an oil change indicator, it reminds us of all maintenance requirements. If you change your oil, it is important that you complete all Acura Maintenance Minder recommendations and reset the light.

And, one more post from the CurryAcura.com website:

Q: I have taken my vehicle to a non-Acura facility and had the oil changed, the facility did not know how to reset the Acura Maintenance Minder light. Will my Acura dealer reset it for me?
A: That depends. It is very important that all recommended maintenance be completed, if more than just an oil change was necessary, your Acura dealer would be doing you a disservice by resetting the light as the light is not just an oil change indicator – it monitors the complete maintenance requirements of your vehicle.

Perhaps your question is worded incorrectly..
The MID Reset IF no Sub-items are present will only reset the Oil Change Reminder. = MID RESET for Oil Changes only.
The MID Reset WILL reset Sub-Items if the Oil Change triggers with any Sub-Items = MID RESET for Oil Change + Sub-Items.

If you only want to Reset the OIL CHANGE REMINDER after a normal Oil Change then do a MID RESET.
If you want to Reset the Oil Change Reminder + Any Sub Items that came up then do a MID RESET.

Doing an Oil Change Only RESET wont change any other sub items that are not yet triggered to be changed.
You cant Reset just the Oil Change Reminder and leave the Sub Items.. Resetting the MID will reset both.
