HDR pictures

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
Well the problem is the place was dark so metering with a single shot makes the hole in the top be blown out. There's nothing to recover there and very little on the windows. This is a problem with doing HDR from a single file...
Now that you mention it though, it looks like I overcompensated on bringing the highlights down.

Have you tried to do it with making four images from a single image? Try going +1, +2 and -1, -2, from the original image. Or if you think it's too bright, forget the +2 and just do the -1, -2 with the original and a +1.

I think that pic could be magical with a contrasty B&W treatment..

My first attempt. Single shot RAW.

That's pretty nice - I like that.
For you people doing this stuff with single shot raws - Are you really getting any effect that you can't do by just adjusting shadows/highlights/saturation settings?
It really doesn't make much sense that you gain anything at all using HDR software - except perhaps convenience.

I'm sure the histogram is completely walled out on the right side.
If your histogram is a U, and you try to go -2 in post, you're still going to have a U due to data clipping.
You do get a stop or two (with really washed out colors) of highlight recovery when you shoot raw, but not much more than that.
I should post a HDR example, +, 0, -, and combined, with histograms of each pic.

OK my first decent try (I think) at HDR. No goofy programs just 3 images & a whole bunch of layer blending & working in Photoshop. Tell me if im doing it right... Cuz photomatix light just turns my images to crap for some reason.

I think you're right, Frank. I did go with one of the more subtle adjustments though.
I shot a few more in RAW today. Didn't bring my tripod on this trip, plus this program just makes it too easy.

I like it mattg. I love shooting pictures with an overcast sky with the intent on creating a HDR. They come out so cool. The contrast of the truck color to the sky really helps it pop.

It's just calling it an HDR pic - and I think I now know what bugs me about HDR pictures as a whole. It's the term "HDR". 'high' is just too vague.
Originally, HDR techniques were to compress ultra-high (clipped) ranges down to a range viewable in a picture. Then people started using them to compress all sorts of Dynamic ranges down to smaller DR ranges, using the same techniques. Even, in some cases, Low DR pictures even further. Which is fine and all, but then the term 'HDR' really becomes weird. It should have been called 'CDR' - compressed DR or something.
It kind of reminds me about how the term 'Near SLR' bugs me, back when it was randomly used all the time.

sounds like you are having a struggle with semantics..

That's basically it.. the only downside is you'll notice the trees and some of the branches & leaves are blurry. When you superimpose images together any movement will be blurred out.. also you're shooting at night which magnifies the effect but the only way to help in that sense is a tripod, and maybe a prime ~f/1.6 lens. Try to use a program to remove some of the noise that you see in the sky would be my suggestion. Are you shooting a DSLR or P&S and are you shooting in RAW? PM has given me great results.

Well, here's my first attempt at HDR.
I'll upload a few more that I tried out earlier today later, but I was really curious to see how it turned out.
I tried to stay with a little bit more of an understated look. I don't like the HDR's that are completely blown out and in your face. This was taken with 5 photos with +/- 0.7 at the ends.

This is the crypt at that Franciscan Monastery in DC, this first room was almost complete dark, a small light was shining from over right shoulder. The door to the room was about five feet tall.

Hey hey,
I'm trying to create an HDR image from a sunset. The unprocessed HDR image that comes up in photo matix (pre-tone mapped), looks amazing to me. I can't figure out how to save a jpg of that unprocessed HDR file....any ideas? This is what it would look like:
