Gathering Dust

I looked at a White ZDX last summer sitting on the dealers floor, the entry for my 60 year old back and the joke of a rear seat and lack of rear visibility turned me off.

While I was in having my 2006 TSX serviced a couple months later, the same ZDX was still sitting in the same spot in the showroom.
I thought I would try the sound system for grins.....
Upon no sound or nothing I asked the salesperson what was wrong "Dead Battery" he responded
I figured due to lack of any interest whatsoever, the battery just died.
You would think the dealer would at least take the time to re-charge battery?

Fast forward to Mid December, I figure I would look at a 2011 TSX Sportswagon.

Rather than be hassled by a sales person, I drove to the back where the New Cars were processed and stored saw NO 2011 TSX Sportswagon,
BUT low and behold...the white ZDX was back in the new car corner COVERED in dust and Oklahoma red dirt rain splatters..STILL untitled...

I give Acura credit for stepping way out there, BUT.....I am thinking this vehicle will be a 3- 4 year run than disappear from the line-up...MDX makes more sense.

Interesting thoughts on this and the future of Car Manufacturers at this site...his thoughts on Acura and Honda and their direction is spot on.

The same thing happened to the TL as well. The first year 09 model of TL were still on the lot earlier this year. I remember this red base 09 TL (made in early 09) in the showroom for the longest time (up till spring 2010). Only when they discounted it steeply that it finally got sold.

I suspect if you go to most manufacturers they have lots of inventories left over they could not sell due to economic reasons. Now a unique vehicle like the ZDX would definitely take longer to sell. Regardless there would most probably be a lot LESS ZDXes on the lot compared to the TL or MDX. I see lots and lots of TLs. For 2011 the target by Acura is 3K units in the US. That should, in theory, keep the ZDX in short enough supply.

Hard for me to see where a production of 3000 vehicles could be profitable, or good for the continuation of a product line.

good chance the battery was also disconnected though, for safety reasons and what not (but not good for sales though lol)

and every manufacture have there flops when it comes to some models, and the ZDX may indeed be one

The following are sales number for the BMW X6:

Calendar year U.S sales
2008 4,548
2009 4,787
2010 almost 6,000

The ZDX sold 3000 for 2010. Sure the X6 is selling twice the number of ZDX but the volume is not high either. Can the X6 be considered a flop too since it's not selling like the X5 (approximately 35,000 units for 2010)?

Or what about the BMW Z4 which is on target for 3,800 units for 2010?

These are niche vehicles and they do not need to sell in mass volumes like the MDX, TL, X5, 3 Series, etc.

Where I am the drivers of ZDX and X6 are all men.

Perhaps the Z4 attracts mostly women drivers. I've seen lots of pretty girls driving convertibles of all makes.

I absolutely love the ZDX. As the economy turns around more people will buy this car. I drove the X6 and did not like it at all. I bought the ZDX (used to have a TL) and I know it does not have rear room of an MDX but I dont care for that. I wanted a 2 door sports SUV with good looks..... and If I need the rear seats I have them. In terms of luxury, sporty and looks it beats the MDX hands down! And the interior is the best I have seen. Classy and rich. And why is everyone worried about the blind spot. It took no time to overcome that. The TL had a blind spot too!

zdx could have be better if it's got v8 in it. ppl do not appreciate the v6 300hp in $50k suv.. x6's base is V6, but you can pay only about $1k more for 400+ torque diesel and also lets be honest... if you can get a BMW X6 for $55k, why would anyone buy a zdx..?? also infiniti fx50 with 400hp+ is only $55k..

^X6 starts at $58K with destination and no options. Loaded it gets into the $70Ks. ZDX loaded is $56K, but I get your point. A V6 as the only option in a $56K SUV kind of blows.

Because some of us have no desire AT ALL to own a Bimmer. In my case, and this is no exaggeration, I would not drive an X6 if it was given to me for free. I had one BMW and it was such a nightmare (quality, maintenance, and customer service), plus their current styling across the line is so hideous, that I have absolutely zero desire to have one.

Actually I do like the X6 and the new 5 series a lot. They are just way out of my budget. By that I mean the initial price as well as the cost of maintenance after the warranty has run out.

Don't forget about the hidden cost of maintenance even during the warranty. My BMW had "free scheduled maintenance" plus the warranty but was in the shop, on average, more than once per month that I owned it. About half the time they were out of loaner cars, leaving me as a one-car household. I don't expect to pay BMW prices to have my car in the shop and unavailable.

Also, that car stranded me and my wife wife on the side of the road several times. Not to mention the times it was drivable but still needed a problem fixed and we had to keep driving back and forth to and from the dealer. It was hugely inconvenient, and if time is money then it was also quite expensive.

Sure, we didn't pay a nickel out-of-pocket for all the problems with our BMW, but I still don't consider that to be free. By contrast, we've owned Acuras and Lexuses for years past the warranty period and have never (NEVER!) had issues like that.

NO BMW owner can truthfully say that...!
