What do you do about brake dust?

I have the CMAX golds, yes they don't dust as much as others accordingly, however everytime I fill up I wipe down each individual rim, within 2 days of driving there's a coat of dust over it already. I've tried the armorall wheel protectant and that stuff is horrible. If anyone has a product or solution that would be great, I thought about buyin type s wheels just so I wouldn't have to clean them lol.

there is no product that will keep the dust off.
there are products that allow easy removal of dust.

wax the wheel.
it'll be easier to clean the dust off.

This stuff works pretty well. Just be sure to apply it to a dry rim. If any water runs down while it's still drying, it will take it right off. It's funny cause then you will have a few finger-print looking spots of brake dust in a few days and the rest of the wheel looks pretty clean...

It does work. Small can cost about $9. Sprays on very thin like hair spray so one can will do many applications.

There is even a rebate to get a free can of it: www.armorall.com/pdf/wheel_rebate.pdf

^^^ That's the stuff I have and I think it's horrible, I sprayed it on clean and next thing you know within a week the dust is harder to wipe off! One time while I was cleaning my car, I used tire shine and it went over the tire a little bit onto the rim, I wiped it on the rim and it seemed to stay shinny for a long time.

^^^^ Exactly ... NuFinish liquid is a good sealant for wheels, long life and is layerable. Most waxes can't stand the heat generated from the brakes.

Its also layerable so you can put on a few coats if you give it at least a day between them.

There is no easy fix. Just remember brake dust can become acidic if exposed to moisture.

Also dry wiping the wheel is going to mar it and eventually they become dull.

I notice my front left wheel gets considerably more brake dust than the other wheels. I just clean it when I wash my car

I've had it on my 05 6MT for like 3 weeks now (OEM/Brembo front pads). Front rims still look like the rear. I have stock wheels too. Maybe the wheel finish has something to do with it.

EG, I've also tried the Armourall stuff and it didn't work that well for me either. I really wanted to like it, but the Type S brembos are just going to have to be wiped down every few days or so.

There are coatings out there that may make it easier to remove the brake dust. Products like Optimum Opti-Coat 2.0, Aquartz, Permanon, the list goes on.

Just don't do a lot of dry wiping ... the wheels are clear coated just like your fender and eventually you will marr and dull them.

I do have a question about waxing the wheels since we bring this up. I have some what a flat black wheel. Would waxing that cause issues to it. Here is a pic of my wheels. Car is filthy from a camping at Road Atlanta for a week, but you get the point. Looking to get some Sonax here soon, for cleaning but interested in how to keep them cleaner longer...Thanks,

You sure they are flat black? Usually that type of aftermarket wheel is clear coated.

I ordered them as flat black. They have very little shine to them. When wet, they look shiny but dry they look very dull. Either way, I would not mind if they were a little more shiny. Would waxing them hurt it?

If they are in fact flat with no clear you need to be very careful which wax you use as most will leave a white haze that is tough to remove.

If you use a wax on the silver spokes does it make the cloth black?

What kind of stupid advice is that? Obviously I have to live with it, but if I can prevent it or do something about I'm would like to find out. As for your "wax wipe" spiel, wax doesn't stand up to high heats like that, even synthetics, I've tried.

The armor all wheel protectant is junk, for some reason it makes the dust harder to wipe off, like it's gooey and smudges rather than wiping a coat of dry dust. So far my only luck is the use of tire shine which seems to work somewhat.

Thats a little off base ... a sealant like NuFinish will withstand close to 400 F .. hotter than what your wheels will get ..

Your right in the fact that a lot of the OTC synthetics won't but then they are formulated to be more than a sealant thus don't do the job of a sealant very well.

At least my GT-R has brake dust colored wheels. I take them off and clean them every couple of months and put on a coat of Klasse. You should see the roll of the eyes I get from my wife when she sees me waxing the inside of my wheels LOL.

these will work great on wheels.

they will reduce the amount of work while cleaning your rims.

Whenever I buy new rims (infrequently), first thing I do is put some of this stuff on them:
http://www.wheelwax.com/

It has worked great so far. I also went to Akebono pads, which stop well and are low dust. Don't know if they make them for Acuras...

Ceramic brake pads and easy to clean 5 spoke wheels are the best solution. There aren't any miracle products that really prevent brake dust from sticking to the wheels, although some of them do make them easier to clean.
