Pitted Chrome Wheels, Need Help!
Hey Guys...so I just got my summer wheels/tires put back on yesterday, and I'm a little disappointed. At the end of last year my chrome wheels had started to get a bit of pitting on the inner lip (behind the spokes), but the face of the wheels was completely unaffected, and the pitting wasn't visible to anybody who wasn't looking for it.
Now, the pitting has spread a bit so that is is reaching the edges of the wheel face and it has worsened on the inner lip. They are RonJon Inspyres so the inner lip is very visible. These aren't cheap wheels but they are starting to look like it. What are my options here? I can post up pics later if need be.
(Yes, I did a search , couldn't find anything of much help)

Not sure whether they are or not. I would assume they aren't, or at least they no longer are because this corrosion has eaten through the top layer of whatever was there.
Is clear coat good or bad?

Here are the pics, as requested...
I tried rubbing some polish on them earlier, only to have tiny chrome flakes come off on my microfiber. This is pretty embarrassing because I have always taken exceptional care to make sure my wheels are clean and protected. My wheels are one of my prized possessions. I have them stored during the winter, and it seems as though this year they neglected to clean the brake dust off of the inside before storing them. Of course there's no way I can prove it, and I am friendly with the shop owner and don't want to lose an (otherwise) good mechanic.

These rims are only 3 years old, but have only been on the car for a collective 18 months or so. They've been washed with car soap and water every week they're on, and protected with WheelWax every month.
Yeah joerockt, I suppose I'll contact Ron
So no hope for an at-home repair here, eh?

Not if the chrome is flaking off ... it may have been poor prep .. usually brake dust causes a pit not a flake .
And moisture has to be present for that to happen.
I'd call Ron... if it was a cheap wheel it would be a different storry.

Just wanted to give everybody an update. I contacted Ron and he's being extremely helpful even though the wheels are past warranty. It seems that my issue is not related to the build/finish quality of the wheels at all, but rather excessively humid storage conditions.

Tasteful chrome looks good on most cars, too much chrome looks bad on anything. I think the Inspyres look great in chrome and their angles really catch the light well.
So this begs the question... should I get new chromies and be more careful about storing them, or should I get alloys? Is it unrealistic to have chrome last more than 4 years on a daily driver? What do you guys think about the RonJon Legends in Liquid Silver?

Just seems odd to me that only after 3 years this would happen, regardless of storage/humidity.

Let's see.................
Wheel #1 - Non-chrome representative
OR
Wheel #2 - Chrome/Chrome-Look
Wheel #2 by a landslide.....................
Sorry madmanmax3000 for hijacking your thread. I would call Rondy and find out what your options are.

joerockt, he didn't mention the possibility of a repair but I contacted a 3rd party chrome shop and they quoted me roughly a grand for the set. Also, since they are 3 years old Ron can't offer a full replacement. However he is offering me a deal on a new set.
The way I see it, the situation is only going to get worse, and getting all new wheels is very expensive but still my cheapest option. I'm considering either the Inspyres in Satin Silver, or Legends in Liquid Silver. What do you guys think?

I asked the shop where I have the wheels stored if he has seen this before, and he said that it happens all the time. He said that it happens to some wheels quicker than others, but that on a cheaper manufacturer sometimes it happens within only a year. This is year 3 for me, so he said it's not to be unexpected. It happens to all chrome wheels in the area eventually. For all of those that haven't noticed yet I live in Boston.
The chrome shop didn't say whether it was common or not, I'm also not sure why you put "chrome shop" in quotes. Is there a problem with me calling it that?

For those that aren't familiar with my car, here's an older picture of it:
Or click the link in my sig for some more current pictures that I'm not sure how to link to.
I need to decide between getting the same wheels (Inspyres) in Satin Silver, or getting Legends in Liquid Silver.
Inspyres:
Legends:
So what do people prefer?? Keep in mind the legends pictured are 19" and I would be getting 18"
