I tried to clay, and failed...

I attempted to clay my car and got scared. I wasn't sure that I was doing it correctly, so I stopped. I purchased the mother clay bar and after washing and drying my car I started. I squirted some of the lubricant on my car and start to gently rub the clay bar against the paint and clay bar start to come apart. The bar was very soft, it had been in my trunk for a day.

My questions:

1. While rubbing the clay bar against the paint, it should be a very smooth almost frictionless feel?
2. What type of motion should I clay with.

I saw someone mention in another claying thread that he puts soap and water in a spray bottle to lubricate the paint. Is this a good idea? I dont see how what Mothers supplied me with would be enough for an entire vehicle.

I used mother's lubricant my first time and I still have 1/3 of the bottle. The fact that you left it in your trunk might be a problem. It shouldn't be soft. It should almost feel like a bar of soap when you rub it on the surface of your car. After each panel, stretch and fold to use a clean surface and repeat. One bar should do a car 3 times.

I'm on my way out to clay bar my car now. Was suppose to be done in april/may. I'm gonna use the soap and water as lubricant because it's easier to wash off. You'll have to use a higher soap to water ratio so it can be really soapy.

Good Luck. You'll love your car all over when it's all done.

I use car shamoo mixed with water as a clay lubricant. You do go through a lot of the Mother's Showtime if you take that route. I just save it for regular quick detailing.
The surface is usually clean when the clay glides across the paint like an icecube melting on a counter top.
