Halogen Lighting, What Wattage?

Hey guys,

Anyway weather’s getting decent here in Toronto, and I have posted local ad’s into automotive detailing and paint correction, I have received a few inquires and have a customer dropping by Saturday morning with a 2001 Honda Accord (black) that would like ‘light’ swirl removal done, or at least he calls it that.

Anyway, I was wondering would a 500W twin head halogen work light, mounted on a tripod be good enough to illuminate those scratch’s and swirls, or would I be better off with a 1000W lighting?

I use a 500 watt twin head, with a tripod and it works great for me. I wax/polish in the garage.

You should look at the rated amperage on it as well. Don't want any breakers tripping.

I use a 1200 watt dual halogen. However, I can use 300, 600, 900, or full 1200 watts.

The higher the wattage, the HOTTER those bastards get! And they do generate some heat!! So select carefully. I won a twin 500/1000 watter.

I have a dual head ( each 500 w ) and it does the job when I have to work in the garage.

And they do get hot ... kind of nice this time of year to warm the area a bit.

When buying one really check the stand. I have one with 5 feet on it and its absolute crap. Hard to open & close and the tubes on the vertical shaft are screwed together using plastic inserts so after a few uses its unstable.

If you can look at one set up before you buy. I'm looking for a used burned out one to swap my top to.

I'm always scred the UDM cord will catch on it and I'll pull it over on the car. Right now I bungie it so it won't.

Yeah, no kidding. Those things can put out some serious heat!
