Fabric Softener to clean exterior?

So I was cleaning bugs off my car one day, my girlfriend told me to use a fabric softener sheet to remove it, and that it works great.

I was skeptical so I tried it with some soap and water on the underside of the rear bumper behind the rear wheel. To my surprise, pretty much everything came off fairly easily without my much pressure or scrubbing at all. Tar, break dust, all the stuff that otherwise would take hard scrubbing came off easily, and I didn't feel much friction, the sheet was very slippery on the surface sliding around easily.

I was just wondering if this method could do any potential harm to my paint or clear coat at all? Anybody have any input on this topic?

I've heard of this too, but it was to get them off your windshied. Not sure what effect this might have on your paint.

I don't see why it would hurt. I use laundry detergent all the time to wash my car lol I also hear you can use Pledge and spray it on the front of your car etc, to help bugs be removed easier. I've used it inside my fenders on my truck to help the mud not stick and it works pretty good IMO.

Don't ever use laundry detergent to wash your car

That is bad for your paint. That's like washing your face with automatic dishwashing soap. Sure it might not harm your skin immediately, but over time it will. Laundry detergent will dull the finish of your paint over time...

Yes I have input ... the sheets will micro mar the clear coat. On crap paint you won't notice it but if your paint is in good condition or polished out you will see it.

We will have 40 arguing this but its a fact. The reason they will argue is because they don't have pristine paint so they don't see it.
