Embarrased: Disappearing Paint Help

Whats up AZ fam! Thanks for checking this thread, i hope this is the right section. Getting straight to the point, my paint is fading...bad. I've searched this forum for solutions but im looking for something a little more exact for my situation. My last resort is gonna be getting it repainted but if any thing else can be done let me know! Oh and how i can prevent this from happening again?

Yikes. What you're looking at there is bona fide clearcoat failure and your only option is a full repaint. In order to keep this from happening in the future, follow this handy dandy little pointers:

- Only hand wash your car. Do NOT use automatic car washes
- Keep your car clean and protected with a wax, sealant, or both.
- Garage your car if at all possible. If you can't....I strongly suggest investing in a car cover.

its an '02 acura TL 3.2 type S.
im pretty sure it has something to do with how i was washing it. and ive never waxed it. it looked perfect in 08 when i bought it. so i'll blame most of it on my ignorance.

I have seen cars that are 20 years old not look like that when neglected. Usually its the substrate or poor prep before paint that causes that.

I had one spot on my 03 TL on the truck that had burnt through the clearcoat. It looked similar. To my discredit, I never hand-washed it, never waxed it and took it to automatic car washes. Because the dirt never really came off, the whole trunk was "stained" and I guess in one spot it just wore right through.

Wow. And I was feeling bad about my clearcoat failure.

Sorry it happened like that. Repaints are going to be pricey unless you go cheap and go to Maaco (I dont suggest it).

Ive been noticing it alot more recently with the 1990s and early 2000 Hondas. For some reason though Ive not seen it on many of the 1980s cars, except the red ones. I dont know why but they seem to be the worst.

I saw lots of clear coat failures in Hawaii since there's salt from in the air carried from the ocean. Do you live anywhere close to salt water?

Its most likely just the UV rays eating right through the unprotected clear coat.
