Engine Detail

Anyone have any pictures (PLEASE), or descriptions, or tips as to what I should cover up with a baggie when detailing the engine bay of an 01 CL-S? Not a mechanic. Thanks.

btw i detailed my engine yesterday. for the first time after reading about it. i used GUNK for my engine cap and other metal stuff in the middle(covering distributor with plastic bag and rubber band). rinse it with water carefully. start ur car and idle it for 15 min. u will see smoke comming out of ur engine and thatz gunk burning away all the dirty stuff. after that process, it looked really clean and almost brand new. used simple green for other places and whiped it off.

instead of plastic bag, you can also use tin foil.

I heard steam cleaning can be harmful to your engine. "high-pressure steam cleaning can force solutions into the engine harness sheath and associated cables". etc....

Well considering we don't have a distributor then I guess there's nothing to cover.

Cover the starter and the alternator.

Not all steam cleaning is high-pressure... there is such a thing as "low pressure steam"

I cover the alternator and starter with a trashbag. Spray the engine down with water to get the large amounts of dirt off. Then use simple green, the stuff you can buy right at any grocery. Spray it over everything. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wash it off. Do not use a nozel on the hose, use just the water that flows from the hose. Dry it off with a rag and you are done

You may want to dilute the SG a little. I read that it may mess up certain plastic/rubber. Visit www.autopia.org for everything you would ever want to know about detailing.

I agree it is pretty dumb... it is a total popularity contest and when it first started people just gave it out for nothing. But giving negative rep points tells me you've got a problem with something I said, and if you didn't have the balls to leave a note with it, i'm usually gonna call you out on it

oh yeah and sorry but

Hijacked?...Certainly not, all this talk has let me to the decision that cleaning the engine bay is simply not worth it. Rather spend my time

Do you find it attracts more dust after you cleaned the engine bay?

Another good thing to do is, after you've cleaned the engine, while you're wiping it dry with a rag, to have an air compressor nearby to blow all the water out of the spots you cant reach. Does wonders.

What happened to talking about threads that aren't a month old, especially when they are dug up for the sole purpose of bitching about their content.
