Car cover for the winter?

I drive a TSX, live in CT, and don't have a garage. I've bought a Jeep to use as my winter-weather vehicle this year. I'm now deciding whether or not it's worth it to buy a car cover to protect the TSX from the snow and ice.

- is there a good, generally recommended all-weather car cover?
- is there risk of damage to my paint due to the useo f a cover? It seems applying a car cover to anything but a totally clean vehicle might rub existing dirt particles into the paint, causing scratches/marring over time and repeated applications over the season.

My "plan B" if a car cover doesn't turn out to be a good idea is to just give her a good clay, polish and wax job first thing in the springtime...

Thanks for any advice.

- Matt

Is there any chance you could use a 10x20' canopy? I'm not quite sure if a canopy of that size will be able to hold up to the weight of snow but I would think it may be a better option than a car cover alone.

Don't take my word for it, I live in Cali, LoL.

Canopy's not going to fly in a condo parking lot, my friend. Good idea though!

I've got a car cover but this'll be the first time I've used it in the winter. It is a genuine Honda car cover so it should be fine.

From my searching on the forums it seems the Acura/Honda OEM fitment is flawless but that its performance against the elements leaves something to be desired...

I have the OEM car cover. I've used it in the snow once and it was great. It was much better to use a brush to wipe the snow off of that rather than off of the paint where you run the risks of scratching the paint. It kept the car very dry and safe so I suggest it.

Also, for the price that you will pay for the cover, you could put it towards a storage facility like an EZ Mini Storage or the like. I was going to do that with my TSX while I'm at school but my parents are letting me keep it in the garage at home. The EX Mini storage facilities offer good rates and it will be inside, completely away from the elements waiting for you when the first spring thaw comes around in March.

I feel your pain, chief. Winter in New England SUCKS.

is there anyway you can rent a storage unit for the winter or search around for someone in your area with a garage they dont use and would like to rent it out to you...

i just dont think a car cover is going to give you the protection you are looking for...car covers are really designed for dust while storing your car indoors....

The first winter I had my CL it had to be outdoors and I purchased the OEM cover from Acura. The fit is super and it seemed to do well with the snow, well that is until spring. I went to take the cover off and found holes all in the cover . I went to the dealer and exchanged it for a new one, and every winter since my car has been in a garage with the cover on.

Indoor storage FTW --- check bargainnews.com --- i beleive i saw something in there for car/motorcycle/truck storage for like 350$ for the season (nov-march if i remember) ---

Or try to find a garage for rent...

I am very wary of where i store my car for the winter --- one winter was at my parents house, one winter at my sisters (3 car garage and she doesnt use any of them, still throw her some money every month to thank her for helping me out) ---

prices ive seen for storage range on the low side from 100-150 month

its easy to look at it as wasted money --- but id rather pay to keep my car in top condition, than chance the plowing trucks at my parking lot pushing all that crap againts my parked car, or the drivers who cant maneuver in the snow and plow into your car.
