Can I Remove a Wood Dash Kit
Can I Remove a Wood Dash Kit
First, I'd like to apologize for all these threads I keep making; guess I've just been spending more time on my car lately. But anyway, last year I had ordered and put in a stick-on wood dash kit. My original plan was to just put it on my climate controls, but my dad was helping and started putting on other pieces so I ran with it. Now I'm thinking about it and it seems like some of these pieces are kinda random and I'd want to go back to the stock look (aside from what I wanted in the first place). Only problem I see from what I've read is that using the 3M adhesion promoter ruins the dash, so I'm weary of that even though the kit and promoter were 10+ years old when I got it. The pieces had the 3M tape on the back with the red plastic you peel off. Seems that the best way is to use a hair dryer to heat it up, but from some of the things I've read I'm not sure if I should even try. If anyone has any advice, whether I should or shouldn't, I'd appreciate it!
Well, I decided to take some pieces off and was successful.....mostly. 3/4 of the pieces came off fine after heating them with a hair dryer for roughly 3 minutes each. The trouble was with the biggest piece. I must not have heated everything properly, since it was a bit difficult to get off. And when I got to the top, it peeled some of the finish right off my driver's vent piece since it appeared to be a kind of painted on soft-touch. Of course afterward I realized it would have been really easy to pop the piece out of the dashboard and get it heated up better and have an easier angle to get the kit off. Ordered another one off eBay, just have to wait for it to come in and make sure it is the exact right color for my car. On the pieces that came off clean, I just had to scrape a little of the foam off and wipe it with some Goo Gone and it looks just as it did before I put the kit on.
