2004- No i-VTEC

It was my thought that Acura would surely be adopting the i-VTEC into the 04 model. Instead they have just bumped up power from the type-s making it about equivalent to a Type-S with CAI. I know that Acura is saying no more "Type-S" but dont you think that 1 or 2 years down the road there will be a higher performance model with i-VTEC which would then most likely bump hp up closer to 290? I was leaning heavily towards selling my 02 type-s for an 04, but considering there will likely be no performance increase (due to the let down of only 270 hp) compared to my 02 w/ cai, I am wondering if it is really worth it for just the technology updates. Just some thoughts that were on my mind.

It's anyones guess as to whether or not Acura will increase the performance of the TL 2 years down the road. However, integrating i-vtec into to the engine is no easy task. I don't even know if it exists on any other SOHC engines, or V6's for that matter. Personally, I think an increase in displacement is more likely than the introduction of i-vtec for the TL engine.

And the new TL isn't just about technology updates. The car seems better than the current TL in almost every aspect, except for the trunk which has gotten a little smaller.

Well With Brembos, Lower and Stiffer Suspension, 18's, LSD, 6MT, EBD, and all these new goodies, I think the car is more performance than your current 2002 Type-S..

Not to mention the new Drive by Wire Technology that makes the car respond better to your foot.

Also if it handles anything like the TSX, It will kick A$$

I personally will wait a bit. Who wants to pay MSRP (or more) anyway? Wait for the initial excitement to pass. I agree. 10 more horsepower is not enough for me. I am waiting.

There is no i-Vtec V6, only I-4. The V6 don't even have DOHC, (only the NSX) not alone i-Vtec.

I would also prefer more displacement rather then i-Vtec. Honda needs to squeeze every last bit of power out of the 4 bangers, so they made i-vtec. For v6, we have our power. Don't feel bad, ACura TL for 43K doesn't even have vtec

Actually they already have a 3.0 liter i-Vtec engine in the Honda Inspire in Japan.... which is a blend of the Accord and TL...

That version has 10 more horsepower than the Accord, but over all the power is very linear and higher throughout the rev range. Another neat feature is that the engine will shut down half of its cylinders while cruising in order to increase fuel economy. I assume this feature may only be engaged in top gear.

Even though the engine is out there, I assume it hasn't been tested enough to release it in the american market. Once it has been proven reliable, I assume we will be seeing a 3.0 and 3.2 liter i-vtec engine in the Accord and TL respectively.

No No.. that Cadillac engine was actual HORSES.. ie: if you wanted to use less hay for fuel, you'd use six or four actual horses, instead of the adviced eight...

yeah .. honda is making the new 04 TL without no i-vtec, but selling a lesser expensive car (accord) with i-vtec. I mean come on guys.... please tell me it is not so...... with even the civic having vtec how is the 04 TL not going to have a vtec engine. All of acura's line-up has vtec.... RSX, TSX, RL, NSX.... but not the TL .... lolz..... i will no longer read this forum ....PS when the 04TL is introduced to the public (which i have already put my name on the waiting list) I will read this thread and flame all for misleading information........ bye kids

Huh? ... The Honda Inspire in Japan is the one getting the 3.0L v6 i-VTEC engine. The Inspire is considered to be a higher end luxury model in Japan. In fact the last gen Inspire was almost exactly the same as the 2nd gen TL.

As far as I know, the US spec Accord only gets a 3.0L v6 VTEC engine.

The '04 TL does get regular VTEC. It just doesn't get i-VTEC. Honda probably felt that their newest engine, the 3.0L v6 i-VTEC used in the Inspire was not ready for mass market in America yet, and it would be a bad idea to release the '04 TL with less displacement and less horsepower than the '03 TL-S.

Could a 3.2L i-VTEC engine be in the works for a '05 or '06 TL-S? ...Anything is possible!

Let me chime in on i-VTEC. The system works by varying the intake cam phasing relative to the exhaust cam. In order to do this you need two cams! This is the "American" definition of i-VTEC and the reason you see it on all the new 4 cylinder cars.

In Japan, it seems like they are using the same term (i-VTEC) to describe a cylinder deacitvation system. Same name, different function. Very confusing huh?:p
