VTEC vs I-VTEC

Can someone explain the difference between VTEC and I-VTEC? I believe the I-VTEC (used only in the 4 cylinder cars) uses the extra cam lobe on intake and exhaust, where the VTEC only uses extra intake lobe. Any other differences? The dealer said the I-VTEC stood for "intelligent", making me think is the engine in my TL unintelligent? Thanks. Steve

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-VTEC
i-VTEC (The i stands for intelligent) introduced continuously variable camshaft phasing on the intake cam of DOHC VTEC engines. The technology first appeared on Honda's K-series four cylinder engine family in 2001 (2002 in the U.S.). Valve lift and duration are still limited to distinct low and high rpm profiles, but the intake camshaft is now capable of advancing between 25 and 50 degrees (depending upon engine configuration) during operation. Phase changes are implemented by a computer controlled, oil driven adjustable cam gear. Phasing is determined by a combination of engine load and rpm, ranging from fully retarded at idle to maximum advance at full throttle and low rpms. The effect is further optimization of torque output, especially at low and midrange RPMs.
To add to the confusion, there IS a flavor of i-VTEC that is on Honda V-6's, but its for variable cylinder management (shutting down 3 cylinders for cruising) but this has nothing to do with performance or cam phasing.

SOHC VTEC - (1 cam)what we have is where there is a 3rd cam profile on the intake only

DOHC VTEC - (2 cams)both the intake and exhaust have the 3rd cam profile

IVTEC - is just another version of VTEC except they added cam profile changing, basically the computer can advance/retard the cam for economy or performance

VTEC and IVTEC are the same exact things. The only difference between the two is that IVTEC engines have a broader torque range. Honda engines are usually known for crappy low end torque and the IVTEC is supposed to compensate for it.
