Maybe next time

Well after a bunch of agonizing debate I decided not to get the 18 RLX Hybrid. I really loved driving the car, but felt that after a few month the head unit would piss me off like the one in my 15 TLX does. I did decide to go with a 19 TLX Aspec AWD in Modern Steel Metallic with Red Leather. At least there I can jack in my phone and use Android Auto. Also I figure with the money I save on the RLX if the Type-S TLX gets released ina a year or 2 or a new RLX then I could afford to take the hit on the 19 TLX and jump early. If I do the RLX and am not happy I will be rapped for the lease term since the depreciation is so bad. Very simply had Acura done the same Infotainment updates tot he 18 RLX as they did to the 18 TLX I would have done the RLX and loved it.

Thanks to those of you that provided me feed back to my questions and I am sure I will see some of you in the TLX threads.

I'm waiting to see what happens with the FMC RLX, if there is one. TLX is a safe choice for now.

I do hope they do release another gen of the RLX. They are headed in a good direction. As much as I would like to see a TLX Type-S as I get older the RLX Hybrid is more appealing. Some active dampers, the precision cockpit some minor improvements in styling and I would actually buy one for the long haul.

I am surprised you guys keep choosing the TLX, with that really awful 9 speed......

The rest of the car is excellent, but....

I find the 9 speed transmission to be a non issue the vast majority of the time (vastly improved since 2015) and as you state the rest of the car is excellent. That was the overriding decision for me.

I too hope the RLX lives on for another run as all other Acura products are heading in the right direction and if applied to the RLX can make it a true flagship for the brand..

Thank you!

I said what i said, because i know Bob (and others), have had a specific problem with the 9 speed in his A-Spec.......

Of course he had a similar problem with this SH, so.....

Trust me this is a tough decision. I love the RLX, but the damn head unit sucks. The TLX the 9AT is a mixed bag. I have a late 15 when they had the worst of the issues addressed. My 15 9AT reminds me frequently why I hate it. There is a particular temperature range ~45-55F that the damn thing shifts for crap until warmed up. Even most days the first 2-5 mins are full of laggy shifts. As I have sifted through posts and reviews there is a general consensus that Acura has mitigated 95-99% of the issues. Sure there will always be a bad example that makes it through to a consumer. I can tell you that my 15 TLX was used for 95% commuting and we used the wife's 16 RDX the rest of the time.

I curse this head unit frequently almost as much as the 9AT. I figure if the 9AT is better behaved and I can leverage Android Auto to bypass the head unit then I am good for now and the Aspec in MSM and Red leather is a beautiful car.

If I do the RLX I knwo the head unit will frustrate me with no alternatives. Also while the car is great the ride in 18 is a little on the wallowy side. Had they done active dampers and added Android Auto / Apple Car play this would have been no contest.
I look at it this way, the RLX lease woudl run me around $200 a month ($170 payment $30 insurance) more than the TLX. My TLS is getting on average 22MPG so there would be some fuel savings, but over 3 years the $6K I save on the TLX woudl make it more enticing for me to take a hit ont he TLX should a new RLX or TLX come out before then. If I do the RLX I will be stuck in it for the 36 months regardless of what Acura releases int he next 3 years, because RLX resale sinks like the Titanic.

I do not see it as awful, but it certainly pales in comparison to the wonderful 10 speed in the Accord and RDX.

Trust me, the 9ZF is not good. The 2018-19 implementation is far better than earlier years of the TLX in that the shifts are crisper, among other things, but I should not have to reset a commanded acceleration in a right turn. (Enter steep turn, lost accelerator response, let go of accelerator, press down, proceed as originally planned).

The 7DCT in the RLX SH is far superior, with faster paddle and routine shifts. I wish there'd been some way to include that in the TLX and keep the price reasonable.

I am bracing myself for less than optimal experience with my Aspec, but hopefully better than my late 15 TLX. Part of me was going to wait and see if the G70 Sport drops by October and go that route, but the "Genesis" dealers here have been less than helpful when I was trying to get a Red G80 Sport.

I forgot to say, the TLX sorely, BADLY, desperately needs a manual. A manual would bring out the best of the J35 it would be attached to. But that's a post for the TLX forum. The car is otherwise quite solid IMO.

How are you liking your ASPEC? How long and how many miles have you had it? Is the 9AT OK?

It's not my old RLX, but it'll do. It's an entertaining daily driver.
