If you actually cared about sound quality you wouldn't be using MP3s.....

MP3's can sound really good (as can AAC) if you fix the levels.

Look for MP3gain and AACgain. Or do what I do -- ReplayGain to FLAC, and then convert that to AAC. Sounds perfectly acceptable to me at 128kbps sampling.

I've always just used CDex to create my MP3 and they sounded decent, but you have to set the kbps to a minimum of 192, anything lower than that and it sounds like crap.

If you don't fix the levels (especially on nearly every CD mastered after about 1992), you're going to hear obvious distortion no matter what the bit rate because the signal is compressed and then amplified to a level that the MP3/MP4 decoders can't handle well.

Give it a shot -- I think you'll be amazed. The huge improvement in sound quality and the consistent levels across all of the music on my iPods really made the effort worthwhile for me.

Yeah when you go higher bitrate you can't tel lthe difference between CD, mp3 or AAC. AAC is better at lower bit rates than mp3 but at 256 which is the standard now a days it'll be pretty much impossible to hear a difference.

Even if you play with adjusting levels?

Sorry I am late to this thread. I am a Zune user. I currently have a Zune HD and I used to have Zune 30's (one sold, one given away) and a Zune 120. My sister and girlfriend also use Zunes.

The Zunes themselves are very well built and durable players in my opinion. The problem is the after market support. I'd like to have a way to control my Zune from a car deck, but I don't think that exists yet. You can't throw a set of keys without hitting an after market deck that links to ipods though.

It's something to consider. If you want to be different and are primarily a PC user, I think Zunes are worth looking at.

And take pictures, apparently.

Yes. Even on the crappiest mp3, I can tell a difference. But I rarely use my Zune anymore due to the functionality of the iPhone. Perhaps if I had a Zune HD, I might feel differently. I also would definitely feel differently if I could get OTA radio broadcasts in the dungeon.

I have both a zune and ipod touch, though the ipod touch is prettier and has unlimited apps, when it comes to the ease of adding/removing music Zune(Microsoft) has made it very simple. I have the first zune that came out and I use it more than my ipod touch because of simplicity.
