Dual monitors? No I want 3!
I got this for my Dad for Xmas to replace his 2 22" Dell monitors.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001392
He asked if it was possible to do 3 monitors, but this I was unsure of. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L. It has one PCI Express X16 bus (his current video card is here) and three unused PCI Express x1 slots.
If 3 monitors is possible can someone recommend what I need to look for to get him setup?

It's completely possible. I'm not up and up with the PCI Express SLI stuff these days, but back in the "old days", you just needed 3 video cards.
I assume that if you have two video cards that support dual displays, you could do anywhere from 1 to 4 displays, which should get him his 3.
The video drivers and OS should handle the rest.

Add a 3rd or just a 2nd one? The current one he has is hooked up to the 2 Dell displays. I'm assuming I'd hook the Samsung one up to the PCI Express X16 and the Dells to the card in the PCI Express X1?

Not anymore. You can do it on one video card. You can even do 6 monitors on one video card now

Either another video card, or you can get a piece of hardware that appears to be 1 monitor and splits the signal for you

Yeah it's a little much, but since he retired he's been messing in the stock market making some small money ($50k/year). It's pretty cool to see one of his stock programs spread across multiple monitors with all the graphs/charts.

Ahh ok, yeah I've seen the 'ultimate daytrader' setup with 3 monitors, reminds me of something from NORAD

^^^ is that the Dell 30? If so, you could have gone with 2 20" 4:3 format monitors, rotated them vertically, and the vertical screen resolutions would have matched your 30".
For a little while I ran that setup with a single 20", but no longer had the need for the 2nd monitor so ditched it.
