You need to use Windows backup to grab the system state. Then use Windows backup to restore the system state.
I hope you know what you are doing

Go to Start menu --> run --> type "regedit"
Export registry
Copy file
Import registry on fucked drive.
Only thing is, both drives have to be identical or else a lot of your apps will not run.

Just copying a "good" registry to a problem PC might not fix the problem - actually you might really hose things up. Best choice - save all of your data, get out the XP and app CDs and start from scratch.

Regardless, starting from scratch the is best way if you have a way of backing up critical data.
Im having a problem where the internet connection will dropped after about 5 minutes of use. I have determined that the problem is sw related and want to try a fresh registry before re installing. There was a ton of spyware stuff on this pc and i had to use 3 diff cleaners to get rid of it all. the network still wont stay connected so i decided to give this a try.
Any sugestions would be appreciated.

You won't be able to do a complete overwrite without pretty much destroying the older installation of Windows XP.
Inside the registry is a lot of installation specific entries, such as the SIDs for each user, application specific entries, service entries, hardware entries, etc, etc.
If you overwrite them, these things will fail.
Your profiles will be lost since the SIDs from one installation (even if it is the same name) will not be the same as the one on the other. This will cause a whole mess of security issues.
Applications may not run properly due to incorrect assumptions about the state of your machine.
Services may fail with the same issue.
Drivers may completely fail due to invalid, incorrect or plain missing registry entries.
Best thing to do is to keep running spyware cleaners and if all else fails, backup, wipe, reinstall, restore.
(Note that I remember reading somewhere recently that there are certain spyware programs running around that muck around with your connection, causing them to fail. You may want to look into that and see if that's the problem you're having.)
