Anyone have this on their 64 bit system?

In the midst of me waiting and waiting for Vista to be released (I hear in Jan 07) I might just settle for trying out x64.

Any benefits in the supposedly better multitasking ability? Is the extra memory ability worth it?

Also I'd assume that this would come with all the SATA and RAID drivers... I don't want to waste more time slipstreaming them onto a new disk.

I ran it for a while.

Not enough drivers and too many of the programs that I used wouldn't work.

Wait for vista (which I have Beta 2 and there are some very nice features and also some annoying ones as well)

 

Someone else did a setup recently.....Can't remember who, but it was a bear to setup and as stated above, not enough support.

 

this is the reason I'm excited about the new AMD 64 bit processor coming out. with that coming out and Vista. I think around christmas time I'll be ordering a new PC.

 

Yeah... I guess I'll hold off on that then.

I just got a new system this weekend and hopefully everything from newegg will come in tuesday or wednesday.

I had to hold myself back on a lot of items... for one I went easy on the processor due to the fact that Vista isn't out yet. DDR2 will be huge too so I will wait on that as well. And the biggest upgrade I had to hold off on was my vid card. My buddy says that DX10 will be out with vista so that'll call for a whole new line of cards....

I hope they release in Jan, bc I'd be pissed if I had to buy new parts within 6 months.

 

Slap XP Pro on it for now....

wow I really know nothing about computers...SADA...RAID...drivers.

 

I ran it for awhile also, while my system seemed marginally more responsive under heavy multitasking, I ran into a few compatilibity problems that forced me back to xp.

 

I usually lurk on these forums but I'll put my two cents on this. I use Windows XP x64 and have been using it since June of last year. The whole argument of not enough drivers for x64 is pretty bogus. Trust me, the only thing I don't have 64-bit drivers for is my TV tuner and that's because ATI, in all their glory, are too lazy to make one. I dual-boot to 32-bit and I have only used twice or three times to keep it up to date and that I am not joking.

Performance difference is very minimal when it comes to 32-bit programs but for the programs that do take advantage of da 64-bit coding you'll see a lot of difference, case in point, Adobe Photohop CS2, FarCry 64-bit, Unreal 2004 64-bit, etc. And yes, most, if not all, 32-bit programs work on x64. Overall, x64 is much stabler than 32-bit, I haven't had a BSOD in a months and everythings pretty smooth on the operating system.

If you want more information on drivers and the whole 64-bit I suggest you download the trial version from Microsoft and give it a whirl. Also, check out http://www.planetamd64.com They have all the info on drivers and help you may need when doing the switch.

 

I posted a while back about using Windows x64. For the few dedicated 64-bit programs out there, it works great. For 32 bit programs, its the same as regular Windows XP pro. And of course, it wont run programs that are 16 bit or have 16 bit installers.

In the end, I wouldnt recommend it to anyone other than a power user who likes fiddling around with their windows setups and 64 bit processors.

There are only a few things I cant find drivers for:

- old network cards,
- webcams
- some scanners

If you have to ask "Is this for me?", it probably isnt nor will you notice anything.

It's funny because I've always been a Mac person since my first computer. The only reason I decided to switch to a PC is that it's a very very cheap way to effectively mount a lot of power for design and play the occasional video game here and there.

I'll be purchasing a Macbook pro soon... hopefully.

 

If you found drivers for all of your hardware, then good for you. That doesn't mean that there is not a lack of drivers for a lot of hardware. Compared to regular 32bit WinXP, there are far far fewer drivers availible for WinXP64

While there are some, SOME, applications that can have a good performance boost when running in 64bit, games are certainly NOT one of them. Most games show basically no difference in performance between 32/64but and some are even slower under 64bit.

Stability wise, WinXP64 is based on the Windows Server 2003 kernel, with WOW64 grafted on, so I guess there could be some difference in stability from regular WinXP, but personally I've always found regular WinXP to be a very stable OS, and I didn't notice any real difference under WinXP64.

bottom line, unless you have a very specific need to run a 64bit application, there is basically no reason to install WinXP64.
