Windows 2000 gurus...need assitance with neice's laptop.
She tries to login to Windows 2000. She types in her user name and the first letter she types is repeated continuously throught the user id field like she's holding down the key but she's not. she tries to delete the letters but the same thing happens when she tries again. Why is this? virus...trojan....! How can she fix it?
Is it only the one key?
It seriously can be a sticky key. Try holding the keyboard upside down above a garbage can, and tap it hard on the side so shake any debris off, turn it right side up and then flip it over again and repeat.
If that doesn't do it, try with another keyboard from another PC.
If that doesn't do it, try booting into safe mode and see if it happens there, too.

the login prompt is an isolated function...in other words no memory resident programs should be able to interfere with the prompt itself....it's def. a stuck key/keyboard problem.

I had the thought, too bad my damn mother called....
I actually thought it was Phil who typed that, but then I realized Phil wouldn't suggest such an idea...
i wasn't able to drive out to my neice's place to look at the laptop. spoke to her last night and she said was different keys. not just one. and it happens randomly. zeroday, you mentioned that the login as a separate function. i thought of that too but after talking to her last night, she said there are times she is able to log in but once in windows, the same thing happens. possible bad keyboard? i will try and look at it tonight.
