Wifi

Been having trouble with the speed of my WIFI. Most of the time it's fine, but times it'll slow down and we can't stream. I checked it against my wired connection, and there was indeed a big difference.... Like 25mb vs. 125mb, at the time. Do I just replace the router or is there something else going on? To me it seems odd that it should work sometimes and not others. Am I missing something?

I have a TP Link AC1750 and an 8 port switch. I have about 10 wired devices and the media, phones, security, smartthings running on the wifi.

Use the 5GHz network. Get a mesh system.

Like Whiskers said, try breaking up the connected wifi devices between the 2.4 and 5ghz networks. If that does not help, try to see if any one device is the culprit.

There's too many variables that can be causing this. More information would be needed to help you with this.

How far are you from the router when testing?
How many users are connected at once? and are they streaming/downloading?
Does this happen to one device or all of them?
Has this always happened or is it a new issue?

3ft
users, devices? We have several phones, tablets, etc... probably about a dozen devices, but no more than 3 or 4 in use at a time.... but not in use when I tested.
happens to everything on the wifi, wired devices are not affected.... although, it seems like, one wifi device will work and the others will say there is no internet.... my wife's phone will say there is no internet, yet the rest of us are working fine... like that... no rhyme or reason
couldn't tell you if it's new, since we we're only a few months into dropping cable, so now we're relying a lot more heavily on the internet connection.

Sounds like you are in a congested area or maybe the routers wifi radios are going bad. Please try the 5ghz suggestion mentioned earlier

If you don't have 5ghz capable wifi devices then maybe try changing the wifi channel on the wifi you are connected to now. Heres a picture of what a wifi analyzer can show you https://www.howtogeek.com/197268/how...rating-system/ and you would set your wifi channel into the least crowded one (choose 1,6,or 11 as they don't overlap). You can download a wifi analyzer as a phone app. This change would be made in the router settings.

Also microwaves messup the wifi unless you're on the 5ghz

Good luck!

if I can buy the google and it's going to fix the problem without me spending a lot of time, then I'll do that. Will it?

They are one of a few. Eero, Orbi, Velop. All are pretty good. You want the newer generation ones with the 3 bands. This will give you constant and good speed around your house.

Too late.. . It's installed

Interesting... I installed and tested with the Google app on my phone and it said 110mb. I tested my wired connection with speedtest.net and 110mb. I then tested my phone again with speedtest.net and it says 30mb. :wtf: My results are not changing either. Strange. Everything is working though, so I guess we'll give it some time and see how it goes.

Like others have said, it could be congestion from other people's WiFi around you. Do you have the channel setting on the router set to auto? That way if other networks are hogging one channel, the router should automatically switch to another to cut down on interference without impact to other devices. My (Belkin) Linksys WRT1900ACS has been pretty consistent with keeping a stable network for the two years I've had it. At least once I realized that the media prioritization mode throttled everything to less than half of what we were getting from the ISP.

The Google mesh seems to be working well other than my network drive not showing up. New headache to deal with. Nothing can be easy. I guess I'll have to call WD tomorrow. I see some people complained about this online, but I don't see any solutions.

I did a system restore on the WD and it showed up on the network. The only problem is it's seen as a new device now, so it's backing up all my devices to the beginning of time. Guess I'll have some deleting to do tomorrow.

I chose wrong, I guess.

The other options were quite a bit more money though.

The google app is pretty cool. The setup was simple other than the problem I had with my network drive/media server... I think I have that pretty much sorted out though.

Anyway... happy I made the change. Wish they weren't so expensive though. Hopefully it lasts a while.
