I just can't deal with the contrast ratio of LCDs. Sucks ass. At least look at the DLPs.

But, if your parents are like most - they just want a big TV that works - forget all the BS details. Depends on what they do most, movies or TV.

Idk then...pretty much up to you. Still give the DLPs (Samsung) a look.

I will say this - the Hitachi's look pretty damn good on non-HD (composite in from sat - use the lilttle yellow/white/red jacks - NOT coax). Never seen the Sony's on non-HD, might be just as good.

Sonys remotes rock, but the Hitachi is nice too. Either one of those would be a good choice.

well is it true that the bulbs burn out fast on the DLP? I been reading that they might have to be replaced every 2 years?

LCDs use similar bulbs too, so you will have the same problemo either way. How long it lasts really depends on how much use there is, and also cycling - IE turning on and off. A person who turns it on for a solid four hours every day will get more life than say someone who turns it on and off four times a day for an hour.

Since you seem to know your shit, would it be bad to buy a TV from a online retailer? Also if you knew of any with great pricing?

Crazy,

Go here.

Fairview Heights Ultimate Electronics
5925 N. Illinois St.
Fairview Heights, Illinois 62208
(618) 235-0819

http://www.ultimateelectronics.com

Pickout a TV, and I can get you one at near cost (the more $$, the more off). My friend is a dealer for them. You just pay him and then either pick it up there, or have it delivered from that store. It'd be the same as if you bought it from the store, just a lot less $$. You could also pay the store /w his pricing policy. But it'd be better to just pay him.

Sony's have the worst price reduction.

Look at a few, post the model numbers. I'll let you know the discounts.

Best discounts are Samsung and Mitsubishi.

my on your decision making here. I'd wait until later when the cheap LCoS stuff comes out. I'm going to dump my 65" when they do... (it's maybe 1.5 years old) LCoS will have the same bulb problems the DLP or LCD will. It'll have a superior picture though

NP, I just sent him the e-mail. I'll call him and let him know I sent it too (since it's friday).

That last one is a good unit (mitsubishi) . I have the WS65869 (integrated HD unit) with a full calibration done on it. The clarity is great.

I'll post the prices as soon as I get them.

I have the same TV (Sony GWIII 60 inch). Awesome TV. Hi-def viewing just blew me away. DVD isn't quite as sharp/clear but I'm comparing this to Hi-def viewing. I don't regret my purchase. I chosed this over the Samsung DLP. Hitachi wasn't even on my list. You can't go wrong with either (Sony or Samsung).

I'd go personally look at a dlp before buying. Many people see "rainbows" that can be fatiguing and cause headaches. Some can't stand it and some have no problems. Go look at one before buying online. The new HLP series is coming out with a pseudo 1080p model in the upcoming year. If you want to get the newer models then you might as well wait. I agree with Siggy, if you want a really really great TV, wait to see what the new Samsung 1080p sets have to offer, or see if LCoS or even if JVC's DILA can do better. If it's just going to be a regular tv for mom, then I'd look at the older HLN series DLP Samsungs. Great deals going around right now.

Andy
