Question What would you choose? Samsung Tab S or Surface 3

I can't decide. This is for my mother-in-law who is not very computer savvy but wants a light and portable device to take with her to her chemo sessions. The device should also function as a laptop to do basic browsing, banking, etc.

I don't want to spend more than $500

I have two choices, both are coming out in May:

Samsung Galaxy Tab® S 10.5"
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 16GB, Dazzling White

or

Surface 3 (RT)
https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en...ucts/surface-3

I personally love Samsung as I have a few Notes, but it's not easy to use for a novice.

The Surface advantage is easily accepting USBs and connecting to the TV, plus a familiar Windows interface with options to install whatever.

I'm leaning towards Surface but their stupid accessories are so expensive. $130 for keyboard.. really?

Help me decide...

HP Spectre x360 13-4001dx, but a little out of your price range @ $899.

That's nice, I also like the Lenovo Yoga, but I don't want to spend so much especially for a person that will never utilize the power fully

$500 tops

The Surface is a portable PC with no apps, but is a full Windows computer that's capable of real work. The Samsung is a tablet that made primarily for entertainment consumption, with almost next to no capability for real business programs.

If I needed a tablet for sitting on a couch in the evening, I'd choose the Samsung. If i needed more of a portable laptop, I'd choose the Surface.

By the way, my comment is mainly for the Surface Pro.

Used Microsoft Surface Pro 3 12" 64GB Tablet for $480 + free shipping - 4YM-00001

But read the comments about accessories. Probably closer to $600 after keyboard/charger purchase....

I've got a Tab S 8.4 and a first gen Surface Pro. They are 2 totally different animals. First off, the Tab S is incredibly thin and light. Its seriously lighter than a lot of paperback books. The screen is gorgeous and it does a great job surfing the web. The battery life isn't stellar, but its not bad either. A lot depends on what I'm doing with it. Gaming takes its toll on it, but reading isn't so bad.

The Surface OTOH is a great Windows machine. Not sure how the Surface 3 compares, but the OG Surface Pro is a bit on the heavy side. Its not like sitting there with a desktop and a 24" monitor in your lap heavy, but its not tablet light either.
