what laptop to buy..????
my mom is giving me a $1000 to buy a laptop. ofcourse i have to shell out the rest of the money if the price is higher than $1000.
what laptop should i buy? i want all the goodies (i mean ALL of it) and it must be loaded. i'll think about the price later, i just want to see what's out there..
tell me what you guys recommend, and i'll take the consideration of weight, price, screen size, and CPU capabilities..
i have a bunch of friends who have laptops, so a lot of what you guys will say , i have probably used/seen... tell me what's the best..

Are you going to have to travel with it? Do you plan to game with it? Will it be a desktop replacement that won't travel hardly at all???
Answer these and give us a better idea on what you need. There are ALOT of good laptops out there for aroudn 1k to 1500.

okay, let me list some of my min. requirements that could filter out some laptops,
i want ATLEAST:
has to look good, (heh,)
2 ghz,
256 ddr ram
15"
dvd-r/cd-rw
has to have wireless network capabilty
good graphics card.
vector, well those things do'nt really matter, like i would bring it w/ me everywhere (i have a small sense of security) if its light, but if it's heavy i'll just leave it.. it's going to school, if it's heavy i'll just leave it at the dorm and use my desktop at home..

If you want better portability and battery life. Go pentium M at 1.6 or 1.8. Almost as fast, but MUCH LIGHTER, and MUCH MORE BATTERY LIFE. Plus, your machine will end up being like half the thinkness....
I have a 700m right now too. Great portability. SMALL DISPLAY. I have to take it on on my housecalls, so it works great for my uses.

this is what I went with
Inspiron 700m
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 755(2 GHz/400MHz FSB) 12.1-in WXGA, Microsoft Windows XP Professional
1GB DDR SDRAM 2 Dimms
60 GB Hard Drive
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Total $1,377.29 with tax and shit

If you want a "good graphics card" then you should probably skip the 700m. IMO, the included Intel graphics are pretty weak compared to the mobile offerings from ATI and Nvidia. Also don't forget to compare apples to apples when looking at screen size. Some notebooks have wide screen displays and some have traditional 4:3 displays.

700m is a wide screen format although it's not a true 16x9 wide screen like an HDTV. Close enough though. I have a 700m too and it fits the role I purchased it for perfectly which is carry it with me on the train every day and get some work done on the ride in.

here is a question for you all, while you're here
what is the CHEAPEST laptop with built-in wifi I can buy? I would use it mostly to tel-serv into my more powerful desktop machines, so I dont necessarily need top-notch performance out of the box, just portability and a fast wifi (which doesnt take up the pcmcia slot...i need that for my card reader)
I'd like to go new if possible, and as close to $0

question... I'm also looking to purchase 700m once I can find a better deal than 35% off $999.00. I wanted to know if anyone invested their money on its sound card. On dell, you have the option of purchasing Sound blaster sound card. I don't know if it's built in but according to its description it would sound ALOT better than its original laptop speaker. Any comment on this?

If you want to go with the best as you claim, then I'd look at IBM. They have the best laptops on the market, bar none IMHO. You will end up paying more. Also you say you want all the bells and whistles, but you also said you want at least 256 MB of ram. 256 mb of ram with Windows XP will SEVERELY limit your performance. In other words your computer will be slow as balls. You have to get at least 512 mb and I would recommend going up to 1 gb. I was able to upgrade my laptop to 2 gb of ram for only $200 so you could always look to upgrade later. Just make sure it supports more ram.

a 15" within your pricerange is going to be heavy.
Also, 256mb RAM is not going to cut it.
Dell has good laptops within your price range... HP/Compaq laptops will also fit in there... think about using an athlon64 based notebooke to save cash...
Also, realize that "GHz" doesn't mean anything anymore, it's all about comparitive performance... a 1.6GHz Pentium-M can whoop on a 2+GHz P4...

Don't buy additional RAM from Dell!!!!! They bend you over big time. Even name brand memory from Crucial can be had for notably less than what Dell charges.
I don't know if they're still the same, but my 700m appeared to have the base 256MB I ordered it with attached to the motherboard. I say this beacuse both SODIMM slots were completely empty when I popped the cover off to put in my 1GB stick of Crucial.
