WebOS Dead
Sad news. I had expectations HP would've expanded WebOS considering they made several statements they would be putting it into their laptops. (And I think they still should for the instant boot similar to what ASUS and the other companies are doing.) But at the same time it was sort of expected. I really wish HTC bought WebOS. A lot more would've been done IMO. Also, word is a lot of retailers are pissed at HP and want them to buy their TouchPads back.

A second person who has seen Best Buy’s TouchPad sales figures confirmed the results as “consistent with what I’ve seen,” and went so far as to say that 25,000 sold might be “charitable.” This source suggested that the 25,000-unit sales number may not account for units that consumers return to stores for a refund.
It has been rumored for quite some time that HP wants to license WebOS to certain companies who do not dilute the experience. That would be ideal. I really do think it is the best mobile OS out there and has been let down by inferior marketing and hardware.
Dead? I hope not.

I did really like the new ads where celebs would cover their face with the devices though.
The TouchPad isn't sad though, it works great and looks good. The Pre's with the exception of the Pre2 were not good at all. The Veer is ok, but too small and the Pre3 still hasnt come out.

Wonder what will happen with the current OS platform, will they continue to build on it, when they have no one to sell to? Or will those with it have to wait until HP goes forward?
But with Google getting Motorola, are they screwed?

They should license it but in reality, if you're a WebOS dev or user, its dead right now. Until HP confirms that they found someone to license their OS to, I'd stay away from it right now as its a dead end road for anyone thinking about it. I'll go even farther to suggest that if you bought a TouchPad within the last month, return it. They'll probably have liquidations on it the next few days as retailers try to get rid of their stock and there's plenty from the reports out there. Don't get me wrong, I've been wanting a WebOS device for the longest time thinking I'd do it once the hardware caught up but today's news makes that thought very bleak for me.

I can browse 99.9% of all websites flawlessly and handles multiple inboxes without issue. Plays music and movies just fine. I felt it was worth the price.
I don't need fart apps to keep me amused and even if the TouchPad is no longer made or supported, I still have a useful device.
TouchPad does what I want with it

Now HP is backtracking on their statement:

Its too late IMO. They should've been looking for a partner months before they made the announcement today. Or maybe they were and no one was biting? Either way, someone at PreCentral said it best, even if they did find someone to license their OS, it would take months again, before a proper device is made. Much like the Nokia and WP7 partnership. The mobile market is moving way too fast and WebOS doesn't have any more months for it to mature some more. It should've happened now if they really wanted that market share. Then again, who knows what'll happen. Maybe Samsung or HTC will license them in response to Google buying Motorola.

$1.2 billion wasted. Stupid move for HP to buy Palm.
Explains why Staples was blowing out the TouchPads a few weeks back. Maybe they knew something and wanted to get rid of inventory ASAP

The company plans to record a one-time charge of $1 billion in the fourth quarter related to the webOS business shutdown and other restructuring costs. It said may also book a charge related to the value of the webOS business but did not say how much that would be.

Hmm.. I wonder what I'm going to replace my two Palm Pre's with?
Maybe I'll just go back to a (don't laugh) Blackberry and at least have a good keyboard. I'm not a fan of Android and I don't really care about 'apps' as I mentioned.
RIP Palm (again)

With this announcement and Google's purchase of Motorola Mobile I think this solidifies Windows Phone 3rd contender position. Blackberry is dead to me.
WebOS, I really liked you, too bad it didn't work out.

I thought about making one actually but unfortunately didn't have the time.
