Unlocking 3g iphone

Possible or not? I've read that it's not possible yet since its hard to even get your hands on an iphone without an AT&T contract, and if you try to cancel the contract and pay the penalty, they will only do so if you bring the phone back. I live abroad and they dont sell it here so wanted to know if anyone knew someone who's done it.

Thanks in advance.

And yeah when i found out how expensive it was, i was surprised that people would buy the 1st gen for that much, but hey people have a lotta dough around here!

Jailbreaking is a process that allows your iPhone to run unofficial third-party applications. It grants the user access to the areas of the filesystem that are by default not accessible. The process itself is extremely easy and can be performed in a couple of different ways. Once the process is complete, and additional icon will appear on the iPhone's home screen: Installer. This is the application that installs all others, and gives you access to everything the jailbreaking community has to offer.

one thing to add is that some people confuse unlocking with bypassing activation. Bypassing activation allows the phone to be used without the need to have att activate it. You can just drop in your current att sim and it will work.
