Dude!!!
Looks like you have a filesystem problem...
if you have root on that box, you should unmount and remount the partition... otherwise Root may have just limited your read access to the Newsgroup Directory.
Another obvious thing is you may not be the owner of this directory.... and you may not belong to the group it is owned by.... so you may need to use chown to modify that..
hope that helps...

hey, i'll help you ...

gimme an "ls -la" of the target directory, and it's parent directory. this way we can see who the owner and groups are. if you are not the owner, or in the group, and the permissions aren't right, then you're screwed. you can check what groups you are in by "cat /etc/passwd | grep username"

other just try "chmod 755 targetfile" and then go up on level in the directory tree to the parent directory and "chmod 755 childdirectory"

.

ok, your shell is ghey, but that is besides the point.

give me a "pwd" before you do the "ls -la" so I know WTF i'm looking at. here is what you need to know, i'll use my U of MN account to give you an example.

The source files for my web pages are located in:

/home/fbazakos/www/*

so while in /home/fbazakos I do a "chmod 755 www" to get the web directory visible to the world.

anything underneat the www corresponds to "www.cs.umn.edu/~fbazakos/" so my directory in my UNIX home dir of /home/fbazakos/www/acura corresponds to "www.cs.umn.edu/~fbazakos/acura" on the web. get it?

so, you have to set the permissions on /home/fbazakos/www/ and all child dirs and files to 755 so that they can be viewed on the web. is your username ejhayes? are you in the undergrad group? <-- you can check this by ypcat group | grep edhayes or cat /etc/group | grep edhayes

ok so you have the following in your parent web directory:

Newsgroup/ 04-Mar-2002 18:46 -
audit.html 27-Feb-2002 19:17 1k
working 27-Feb-2002 20:26 1k

i can see the bottom two files ... when i try to view the Newsgroup i get "Forbidden - You don't have permission to access /~ejhayes/Newsgroup/ on this server." Which is a 403 error.

what is it that you need?

from the parent directory of what is shown, you need to chmod 755 Newsgroup, then the same to the children of Newsgroup.

you can't multi-list... you can use the * operator as a wildcard ... for example: chmod 755 *.jpg will change all the files ending in .jpg to 755 permissions.
