TELUS Mobility launches TELUS mobile TV on its national 1X network
Friday August 26, 11:46 am ET

SCARBOROUGH, ON, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - TELUS Mobility today launched TELUS mobile TV, offering clients across Canada real-time access to live television programming including news, weather and shopping channels on their wireless phones.

TELUS mobile TV is powered by MobiTV, the world's first network and platform providing live television on wireless phones, and operates on TELUS Mobility's national 1X data network, which offers coverage for more than 90% of the Canadian population.

"TELUS mobile TV puts real-time television programming directly into the hands of clients, whenever and wherever they might want to be entertained or informed," said Robert Blumenthal, TELUS Mobility's Vice President of Products and Services. "It's another example of TELUS Mobility supporting our clients' increasing desire for phones that serve as powerful mobile multimedia and entertainment tools."

Costing just $15 per month for unlimited viewing, TELUS mobile TV lets clients watch live, real-time programming on seven channels: CBC Newsworld, Fox News, G4 Tech TV, Le Reseau de l'information (RDI), MeteoMedia, The Shopping Channel and The Weather Network. Additional channels, including business news, sports, entertainment and music content, will be available soon.

Clients can subscribe to TELUS mobile TV directly from their wireless phones using the pre-loaded Wireless Web service. After downloading the service, TELUS mobile TV will be accessible from the phone's menu at all times.

TELUS mobile TV is initially available on the Motorola V710, a multimedia flip phone equipped with a large, high-resolution colour screen, a 1.3 Megapixel camera, video capture and playback, an integrated MP3 player, optional expandable memory cards, and Bluetooth support for wireless headsets, car kits and data accessories that let users link with personal computers to synchronize contact lists and calendars.

I cancelled MobiTV a little over a year ago... the audio quality is good... but the "video" is basically a animated gif. heh.

Since Verizon has officially launched high-speed wireless services, someone here should be able to tell you how much smoother and cleaner LIVE TV is over the EVDO network. Unlike 1x or 3G, it's very useable.

I was supposed to get a 30day trial of it, but I;d have to call and cancel it, but I hate calling people, so I would have never cancelled it, so I asked for it to be removed the day I got my phone.

I tried it for a couple months. Channels took 2-3 minutes to load, and then the video was awful, like 1 frame per 2 seconds at best.

I can't wait until it starts causing car accidents from people watching TV instead of driving...

TV on the old 3G network was very slow but the audio was pretty good. It's a first start into something much much better coming pretty soon, which is data networks with higher speed and great capabilities and more flexible, etc. Pretty soon you will be able to see the person you are talking to live and in real time. Imagine having a 4-way split screen for a 5-person conference call and the person talking is centered and highlighted on an tiny HD-C (high-definition cellular) screen. In our lifetimes.

Ok, so I made up the "HD-C".
