AT&T purportedly looking to push iPhone exclusivity to 2011

Apple should really not let this happen IMO. I think if they want to push innovation leaps ahead of ANY manufacturer it's time they open it up to other providers.
AT&T purportedly looking to push iPhone exclusivity to 2011

It's a little silly just how hush-hush this whole iPhone-AT&T exclusivity agreement has been, but now it sounds like it just might be next century before any of you CDMA loyalists are able to indulge in the App Store. According to a fresh report in The Wall Street Journal, people "familiar with the matter" have suggested that AT&T is feverishly working to extend its exclusive agreement to carry the iPhone in America until 2011. Last we heard, the deal was stretched out through 2010, and considering just how many new subscribers are flocking over solely for this phone, can you really blame the guy for wanting another dozen months of bliss? Not surprisingly, an Apple spokeswoman had more to say about her personal life than on these rumors, but if you were really banking on snapping up a Verizon-branded iPhone at the end of next year, you should probably ask someone to blast you with a giant fire hose of reality.

We're just at the tip of the iceberg.
With more things going mobile, there's a shift away from using laptops/notebooks and instead apps on personal devices is the new IT paradigm. Cost to replace is low, app development isn't as difficult, less to carry and easier access (wifi and cellular data lines in one device).
It's no surprise that there are more mobile phones per user than there are laptops even with laptop pricing decreasing as much as they have in recent years.
If you want to get into a field that is booming right now it's any field that centers around the mobile platform. App development including games (which is the fastest growing industry right now), hardware development.
The iphone just happens to be leading the way at the moment. The palm pre and android should hopefully be good competitors, but they've got a long way to go IMHO compared to the iPhone.
If any other phone can get the Flash Player on it before the iPhone, you'll see a different picture.

So are you implying that if the iPhone were offered with Verizon it would come with something other than the OS it ships with now?
Apple's quality control and OCD thanks to Jobs won't let that happen. When, not if, the iPhone moves to other providers it will still be running Apple's OS. If each provider decides to pre-install their own app based on Apple's iPhone SDK that's something different. The phone though should work the same [hopefully]

Apple stands to gain so much by lifting the exclusivity of the iPhone.

this phone is gonna be awesome. I can't wait till it is released this fall. If the specs for the Verizon version don't change it would mean Verizon actually released a non crippled phone with would be amazing but not holding my breath on that.
great for at&t. dunno if it's the same for apple.
i switched over last summer because my contract ended with sprint, and they had nothing i wanted. if the iphone was available for sprint, i would have stayed since most of the people i call the most are on sprint.

I know 7 different people that have switched from their previous provider to AT&T just for the iPhone in the last 3 months alone - my wife and I included.
Ditto. I actually liked Sprint a lot, but they offered nothing that compares to the iPhone. Although if all my friends and family continue to migrate from Sprint to AT&T, problem solved.

on both counts.never had a problem with sprint's service besides their customer service and lack of phones. at the time, the instinct was the only thing close to the iphone. and i didn't want the curve so
but i do like how verizon lets you pick your "favorite" callers even if they're on a different network.
