Question Switching and Loosing Old Number

Do you guys switch when the contract is up (well or simply jump) ?
How then do you deal with loosing your old number ?

Is there a web site that acts like a central repository where one can enter old and new number(s) so people can look up ?

My current contract is up and I'm concerned about the consequence that
if I switch carrier/plan and end up with a new number, some people may not be able to reach me.

you can get your number ported to the new service. i had cingular and switched to tmobile after the contract was up. my number went with me the first 24 hours though, you will have to bring both old and new phones, just in case

also, if you use the provider's site or calling them to pay your bill, it'll be a PITA. you won't be able to access it anymore since your account no longer exists with them. make sure you pay your last bill ahead of time

no honestly. I can actually live w/o a cellphone believe it or not.
So I have Cingular - was told I can NOT keep old number if I switch plan within Cingular.
So you are saying I can have old number ported over to another carrier ?

since you're keeping the old number, there's a chance when someone calls you, your old phone may ring instead of the new phone. didn't happen to me though but they informed me "just in case". if you're staying with the same provider, there should be no reason you cannot keep the number. all you're doing is switching plans
