Switch recommendations

I am looking for a SOHO switch. I have maxed out the 5 ports on my Netgear WNDR3700v4 router and since i plan on getting a NAS in the near future, I need to get a switch.

Looking for recommendations...

8-16 ports
100/1000
does not have to be rack/rail mountable but it would be OK.
Unmanaged, will plug into the Netgear and the Netgear will handle DHCP, etc.

Possibly:
Netgear 108 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122111
TPLink TL-SG108 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo

I'm looking at that Netgear too, but I wondered why the price was so much more expensive than I remembered - third party.

As long as you don't need nic teaming, buy whatever is on sale from a brand you trust. If you need teaming then look for something that supports 802.3ad. http://www.synology.com/en-global/support/tutorials/525

No issues with my Trendnet TEG-S8G (discontinued). Picked it up from NewEgg a couple of years ago for $20 shipped (on sale).

The S81G is it's replacement, currently on sale at NewEgg for $27 shipped.

Second on the TrendNet switch. I've got 4 of them. 2 of them are on the network full time, 1 for when friends come over for old school lan party and a backup just in case. Haven't had any issues with any of them.

And FWIW, my modem, router and switch are all on a dedicated UPS...

The reason I asked is if you have any DVRs connected to this switch, look for models that support IGMPv3 snooping.

Starting to think that I want to future proof a little and having Link Aggregation would be nice.

I read the review of the Synology CCC posted in the NAS thread and it makes sense to spend a little more on a managed switch with LA.

I sometimes wish I'd done that because my home server supports LA, but at the end of the day even with LA the biggest single stream I can have is 1Gbps and that seems to be fine for my purposes. And it leaves me without having to manage the switch.

I'm thinking that when LA becomes a must there will be one of

(a) 10gbps ethernet
(b) in-home fiber, or
(c) unmanaged switches that auto-configure LA and they will be cheaper than the current upcharge to a managed switch.

For future-proofing, I went with a lot more ports than I currently need instead (48 port switch when I currently use about 20).

Big house wired for ethernet, family of 4, lots of computers/game consoles/media streamers where I prefer wires to wireless.

You make a valid point regarding need vs. wire speed.

In my case, this is less for home use than for work. I regularly read/write hundreds of GBs at a time, and want the LA for both the NIC redundancy AND the ability for more than one computer to achieve the max throughput of its single wired connection. Also, I may put two NICs into a few machines to try that out. :MrBurns_muhahaha:

Sounds like you should be buying some managed big iron off of eBay instead of getting consumer grade stuff.

perhaps...

It's simply data though, only one or two users, so I don't want management overhead to get out of control...

Just need to NAS the data and have it available for fast reads/writes from a few workstations.

I was thinking the good stuff has the better throughput to actually deliver to the full potential of the wires.

Could be quite true. The data is currently on a DAS box with eSata connection, so hopefully the new setup, when I implement it, will yield better throughput AND multi user ability.
