sound reduction barrier for computer servers?

Anyone work in IT that can recommend a good and cheap noise reduction barrier for computer servers? We just reconfigured the office and they moved the six or seven servers out by my desk, so it's kind of loud. I want something installed that will block the sound. Thanks.

The only thing I can think of that wouldn't impact cooling is a sound-resistant rack enclosure. However, they're not necessarily cheap. I saw them at Macworld a few years ago...

Move.

They probably put them there in hopes that you would quit.

By a free standing cubical section. Place between you & the servers.

6 or 7 servers next to you? That sucks!

Cheap solutions will not be effective. Curtains, barriers... will barely help. For as many as 7 servers, it may be less expensive to build a small server room.

I don't think there's a cheap solution to this. Any sound proofing within the chasis or rack will trap more heat in.

That sucks that they moved the servers right next to your office. I've configured servers in my office before and the noise is enough to drive me postal. I can't imagine having 6-7 servers right outside :die:

They should have bought tower servers if they don't have a computer room. Much quieter.

Like stogie said, dynamat is probably your best option or a cheaper knock off version. Or you could put up some insulation from home depot. It will absorb sound but I think it converts the sound energy into heat.

In my Home Theater days I made custom sound boards for my back wall and they worked great, they really quieted the room. Also look into egg cartons and a soundproof door cause you can dynamat the whole room but sound will still come through the door.

Actually, that's not too far off. Long term exposure to high sound levels is a definite health risk. You might look into what OSHA has to say about this. This might help. http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owad...ards&p_id=9735

Put them in a line like a human centipede. One will suck the exhaust from the one in front of it. You should only hear the equivalent of 1 or 2 servers.

If you can arrange them in a circle, you will create an Internet vortex that will create a wormhole that will transport you to the planet of porn where you can walk on a cosmic beach with Ron Jeremy.

well then... save your money. Just move your desk to the epicenter of that vortex - it is super quiet there.

Does your office phone system have an intercom system?

If so, broadcast that sounds to everyone until someone complains. Then give them that look like "See!".
