If its still a problem and you can't seem to figure it out, I'd imagine the restore does not have SP3 included. You could reinstall, then download the SP3 install, run that, then do windows update. I've seen machine not want to do SP3 first and its pointless IMO not to do SP3 first as it supercedes and/or includes most updates its trying to load.

i figured it out. its a thing called msmpeng.exe that is eating up all the cpu when the computer boots up.

i guess the most recent set of automatic windows updates installed a newer version since the computer seems to run a bit faster at boot.

it was all because i installed the stupid windows live essentials bullcrap.

actually its still there, but the cpu drops from 99% to like 3% or 0% pretty fast.

its only an issue at startup so it doesn't matter anymore.

yea i saw that.

i think i read that the reason for the slow down is that its scanning itself.
and to fix it would be just to exclude it from being scanned.

Yup! I've noticed it to on a few PCs, it seems to eat up some resources right after boot but then it goes back to normal afterwards.

Yep, that'll do it, as Stunna stated, I've seen quite a few machines have the same issue. I was hoping the 2.0 beta might be better but I'm seeing it spike as well.

Contacted HP and luckily the HD is still under warranty. They're sending me a new one Windows 7 comes pre installed so it should be an easy set up. Now on to investigating free ways to recover her pics from that piece of junk....

my laptop's hard drive crashed after BSODs. i took the HD out of the laptop and connected it to my old laptop with a similar universal adaptor. once i plugged it into my old laptop, i got the same error message saying i need to format the drive.

basically, after weeks of research and experimenting, i came across a program called testdisk at cgsecurity.org.

after playing with it a few times, i saw that my files are still there (it's a DOS-like tool). i was eventually able to copy all of my files into a 1TB external HD i bought. whew!

i don't remember the steps i took, and it was mostly by chance. good luck!
I'll give this a shot....btw I posted this topic on 3 diff forums and Azine is the only one that came thru! Thanks again guys

free and data recovery do not usually mix. The question is how much are those pics worth to her? $100? Most data recovery programs let you install and run them for free just to see if it's possible to recover the data using them but if you find out that you can use said program to recover data then that's where they make you pay for the program before it'll allow you to actually recover that data.

but as with all of my advice take this with a grain of salt, see sig below...

I have had nothing but problems with them. For years. Should have swapped it out the day it arrived...

In my experience, consistently across their range of products and historically for the last 10 years or so, they are more likely to fail than others. Many people have them and have had no trouble, but I will not willingly buy one and I buy several hundred drives per year.

Odd, they've been rock solid for me. I've had one Maxtor and one Seagate fail me but all my WD's have been very reliable.
