SIM Cards Matter

When I first got my new Skyrocket and turned it on, it said SIM not provisioned MM2 or something like that. I really didn't care because I had save all the other contacts, etc. on the old SIM and needed to transfer.

The old SIM worked and I could make calls, but no net connection unless I was connected to my wi-fi. After reinserting the new SIM and going through the activation on the ATT site, I have a bright 4G icon, visual voice mail icon and more.

Moral of the story, get a new phone, use the new SIM card.

Yep. Usually they are provisioned better, but in your case I'm sure 4G had a lot to do with it.

But wasn't that the whole point to using sim cards. That you didn't have to get a new one each time?

I thought so too, but with the 4G LTE phones and forced new data plans, something must be different.

The reason you needed a new sim card is due to the new APN. You could've manually changed it in the older SIM card and fixed it. ATTs 4G/LTE uses a different APN from their non-smartphone, iPhone and Blackberry plans.

In Italy you take the SIM card with you to the next phone.

Another factoid. In Italy when someone calls you on your cell phone they pay the minutes, not you. It is considered double billing to charge both individuals for the call.
