SE W810i ringtones

Just got a W810i yesterday after waiting for over a month, but I can't set any of my songs as a ringtone. I've read that unlocking it will override the phone's firmware and enable me to use any song as a ringtone - is that true? The program was called Davinci I believe, could I download that and plug in my phone with the USB cable to unlock it? Or do I need one of those SE unlocking units with the cruiser cable?

It's crap like this that makes me want to ditch Cingular, but I seriously need rollover minutes, and I can't stand the overly ubiquitous, watered-down VZW interface. Plus the phones are so nice too, this thing on Mega Bass sounds better than my iPod.

Any help would be appreciated.

You don't need to unlock it. The phone won't play a full mp3 file as a ringtone because the files are too large.

Download Audacity at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Open any song you want to make a ringtone out of, cut/copy a ~30 second portion of it and paste it into a new Audacity project. Export that clip as a new mp3 file. Transfer that file to your phone, set it as the ring tone and enjoy.

Did everything, then it says I need the LAME MP3 encoding to export the file. Whats up with this? And am I supposed to "Export as MP3" or "Export selection as MP3"?

This is really weird because on my old D500 I could set any song I downloaded as a ringtone regardless of length or bitrate.

^Probably because you have the international version, I have the Cingular one.

I have a chopped MP3 as my ringtone now, I figured it out with the instructions. Thanks.

Sorry I forgot to mention you need to download that encoder from the audacity site as well. After you locate the file for your first export, you don't have to worry about it anymore.
