Question about wireless service in China

I have a Nokia 3200 on AT&T M-Life service, is there such a thing as a chip that I can purchase once in China that will allow me to use this phone there? Would appreciate any advice, as I usually do not follow wireless trends and technologies, especially those overseas.

Sorry man that AT&T 3200 doesnt have the 900 Band which you need for it to work in China.

Thats not even GSM, go to www.phonescoop.com and enter in the model #'s and it will tell you what bands it supports, you need 900 for China.

Unless you'll be there longer than a few weeks -- you might as well just buy a pay as you go and have your calls forwarded to your temp number.

But it will work in Hong Kong/Macau if that is where you are going in China.

just so you guys know...i brought my phone with me to china so that i could have it when i returned from the airport. for curiosity's sake, i powered it on while in china, and guess what? i had service and have used it sparingly. service has been readily available when needed throughout beijing, xian, and shanghai.

That's good to know. The whole purpose of the 1800 GSM band is an overlay to 900 GSM so it appears that the older 900 GSM service in China is expanding to meet the capacity demands.

Basically just check and make sure that the phone is a "world band" phone. Usually most quad band phones are capable of that. Then make sure that the phone is unlocked and you should be good as gold.
