There's this software that's been available for over a year called Windows Vista that does this. To enable file previews while running windows vista first open the folder that contains the music files then click the organize button in the upper left corner then go to layout and select Preview pane. Then the preview pane should appear on the right side of the explorer window and if you have Windows media player set as your default player it will play the song without you having to open it. This won't work if you have iTunes as your default audio player since iTunes doesn't support this, neither does the Zune software for that matter.

damn me for having VLC and winamp as my media players, i wanted to try this out.
It may work with VLC or Winamp, IDK. Me personally I don't really open any music files by double clicking them in explorer it just find them in iTunes or Zune and play them there instead of digging through folders. So the fact that WMP is the default player doesn't mean much to me it just means that if I play an mp3 from the net it's gonna open in WMP instead of iTunes and I'm ok with that for those rare occasions, I'm probably not gonna save the file anyways so what do I care.
