PC won't play MP3 files

My PC stopped playing MP3s. I took WMP 10 off, DivX off, all codecs off, tried WMP 9 and it still won't work. Put WMP 10 back in, same problem:

C00D1199: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

The file type is not supported by the Player. For a list of file types (formats) that are supported by Windows Media Player, see Supported file types.
The file type is supported by the Player, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the Player.
The file type is supported, but you are trying to play it in a way that is not supported by the Player.

It's all bs. It was working 2 hrs ago. Now nothing works. Only video (w/o audio).

I don't know what happened. I installed a random codec and sound came out during install, so speakers work fine.

Any ideas? Thanks for attention.

PC has WinXP Home.

You stuck on WMP? Maybe try Winamp &/or iTunes. Neither of those rely on any of the WM codecs.

I got a video to play with DivX player. MP3s are still a challenge. I'll try WinAmp again after a 2-yr yatus.

if you are running XP the easiest thing to do might be doing a system restore to a time when it was working.

I'd give musicmatch a try. I think it is better than winamp along with many others.

Download it here

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd say give a third party software a try.

I use MusicMatch also. Using version 7.5, didn't like how bloated it got with version 8 and up.

I used the Open Source "Media Player Classic" as based on the old standard WMP 6.4. i.e. before the bloatware. You can get it at SourceForge.net

Other than that, I don't know. Sound like the built-in Windows MP3 codec is farked.

Bloated isn't a problem. It has a bunch of nice features, I just don't care for the interface in version 9. I like 8.something better but they ask you to upgrade everytime it runs. If they would only let me keep 8 without bugging me about upgrading that would be cool.

BTW, does anyone know of any free software that lets you make clips from mp3's? I mean musicmatch will record mp3 clips but only when you are ripping from the cd. I want a software that makes a clip from the mp3 file itself. I will be using it for my mp3 ringtones. I am getting tired of burning an mp3 to a disc only to rip a clip from it. I know, I'm lazy.

I'm in charge of all 4 PCs at home and with a wireless network, things can get tipsy. I was downloading a movie and everyone thought there was something wrong with their PC because the web was "down" (very slow), and immediately started messing up their software trying to "fix it". Plus SP2 didn't help anything. I finally got the Sony to work without it, and I catch my dad trying to put it back on, "This time it will work..." I stopped him just in time.

I put WMP 10 -- which I like a lot, BTW -- but it didn't work. I put the latest WinAmp in and it works great, so WMP is obsolete again until the next one fixes the codecs galore problem.

Thanks for all your help!!
