Palm + HP = Amazing Phones????
I have a great looking HP1, with a horrible windows based processor...
I currently own and use an OK looking Pre with a slick, but immature Web OS processor...
Link to recent article about HTC possibly buying Palm...

I doubt it would happen, but if it does I bet it would be due to google/Android.
They would want to own Palm's patents for their upcoming legal battle with Apple and could have WebOS as a back-up OS in case they can't sell anymore Android phones.

According to a report based on a source from an Asia-based Reuters correspondent, smartphone maker HTC has decided not to bid for Palm after looking at the company’s numbers. The source, which reportedly has direct knowledge of the talks, said there “weren’t enough synergies to take the deal forward”.
That leaves Palm, which has been struggling to boost sales of its new range of smartphones, running out of options fast.
Bloomberg on April 12 reported that the Pre and Pixi maker had tapped Goldman Sachs and Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners to find a buyer. HTC was cited by a host of industry pundits as the best fit.
If the Reuters report checks out, this means bad news for Palm, even if CEO and former Apple exec Jon Rubinstein has been telling press that the company could survive as an independent company in spite of disappointing sales of its flagship handsets. Rubinstein has also expressed interest in an alternative route to an outright acquisition, namely to start licencing other smartphone makers use of its webOS operating system in their devices.
We should note that Palm’s head of software and services has just quit the company to pursue a career at Twitter. More and more, Palm looks to be a sinking ship.
It makes the company’s new slogan for webOS all the more ironic: “Life moves fast. Don’t miss a thing.”
According to this morning’s Reuters report, the only major Asian bidder now left in the field expected to show an interest in the plagued smartphone and software maker is Lenovo, after HTC apparently declining to bid and Huawei dropping out of the bidding race earlier. Lenovo, the world’s number 4 PC brand, had more than $2.4 billion in net cash reserves at the end of 2009, according to its website.
Other potential buyers that have been cited by industry analysts in the past include Dell, ZTE, HP, Acer and Nokia.
Question is: if even the most likely buyer is not pleased with the numbers, who would be?

Computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co. has agreed to acquire struggling smart phone maker Palm Inc. for nearly $1 billion in cash.
The companies announced Wednesday they had agreed to the deal, which will see HP pay $5.70 for every Palm common share. Palm had closed trading Wednesday at $4.63 but traded as high as $18.09 in the past 52 weeks.
When debt is included, the deal values Palm at $1.2 billion.
The transaction is expected to close by the end of July.
HP said Palm's webOS operating system will help it participate more aggressively in the fast-growing market for smart phones and connected mobile devices. It also said Palm's current chairman and CEO, former Apple Inc. executive Jon Rubinstein, is expected to remain with the company.

Just don't understand why HP would want to delve back into the business. PocketPC (now WinMo) is dying a slow death.
Android and Apple are going to steam forward taking WinMo out in its path.
Hell even me, a die-hard WinMo user is looking at the new Android phones.

that would be hella sweet if they could get a crowd behind it... Apple is so far ahead in the market right now... playing catch up might mean getting all the winmo peeps on board for a webos vehicle... I would love to see Apple and android get some real competion!

Report: HP kills Ballmer's Windows 7 tablet
Less than two days after Hewlett-Packard acquired Palm and inherited the struggling mobile company's operating system, reports say the computer maker has canceled its Windows 7-based tablet PC dubbed "Slate."
Justin Sullivan/Getty Images
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer shows the HP Slate during his keynote at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show on Jan. 7 in Las Vegas. HP has since canceled the tablet, according to reports. Click to enlargeTechCrunch's Michael Arrington reports, citing an anonymous source, that HP was not satisfied with Windows 7 as a tablet operating system. And during a conference call Thursday about the Palm acquisition, HP was evasive about whether it would release the Windows-based Slate, Silicon Alley Insider reported.
The Slate is the HP tablet Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off at CES in January. The report also comes the day after Microsoft said it canceled its Courier booklet project.
Why am I not surprised with HP's position on Windows 7? Read my Thursday analysis of the tablet-OS market, and why Microsoft loses if it snoozes.
Maybe it has already lost. Perhaps the Slate's reported cancellation shows that we might end up seeing mobile operating systems on most tablets.
HP has already announced a tablet that runs Google Android. So has Dell. The Apple iPad, which was released to the usual Apple fanfare this year, runs the iPhone OS.
Now, perhaps we will see more HP tablets, this time running a retooled version of Palm's WebOS. Do you think the operating system is up for the challenge?
