Question P3 vs. P4 Intel that is

I am thinking about buying a computer to mess around with, basically test my Linux Skills.
I was thinking of getting a Pentium 3
They have on on ebay for $159.00 , too much? or a good Deal?

Brand: Compaq
Memory (RAM): 128 MB
Chip Type: Intel Pentium III
Hard Drive Capacity: 20 GB
Primary Drive: CD-ROM
Processor Speed: 1 GHz
Bundled Items: Keyboard, Mouse, Network Card

Now all I want to know is if I ever feel like adding some more memory or upgrading it, how big of a difference is a P3 1.0 ghz and a P4 1.0 ghz. Because I am typing right now on a 1.0 ghz Pentium Centrino and its fast enough for me since I am not running huge apps. I will prolly end up throughing Windows XP on it, if linux ends up too hard for me to bother with.

i don't think there are any P4's in 1.0 ghz. you should check out compaq or crucial.com to see how much it would cost to get some additional memory sooner rather than later. but the P3 will run XP fine especially to just mess around with like you said, but you should up that ram, xp is a hog.

check linux site to see if the linux flavor you'll be using has issues with the hardware. You don't need much of anything to run LInux but if the hardware isn't compatible............you'll pull your hair out.

I have installed XP in a PII 400 Mhz, a bit slow but works.

PIII should be fine for Linux, i've personallly seen it running in a Pentium MMX 200 Mhz with no problems (no GUI tho).

Also, I am Pretty sure that Centrino runs a a different correlation speed than a regular P4, at least that is how it works with Pentium M.

1.5 Ghz Pentium M > 1.5 Ghz Pentium IV.

Anyone can confirm this?

I used to run different linux flavors on my 400mhz PII box. it's adequate to play with. don't just get too crazy with all the visual effects and stuff. I think different window managers will vary on resource usage also

about 286's, but I'd even say anything above 330mhz will do fine.. I actually used it at work.

sounds reasonable
I picked up one just like that 2 summers ago at computer show (just the cpu) - $175
This is perfect for learning Linux, no need for P4 IMO. Use the heck outta it.
You don't run big app - 128 RAM is enough for Linux for your need.

>> I will prolly end up throughing Windows XP on it, if linux ends up too hard for me to bother with

don't have that attitude, if you wanna learn Unix/Linux - learn it.
it's total immersion - forget about Wintendo for a change. Heck you'd likely get hooked if you're the kind that really wants to know how computer, internet works.

this guy is down the street from me so thats why I am entertaining this offer. As for P4, I might eventually use it in my car so wanted a smaller processor.

I personally go to special computer shows where I get ridiculous prices. (www.marketpro.com)

some of you guys running XP on PII? wow, that must suck as hell, Im running XP on 3Ghs 1,000Gb RIMM ram and I think it can be faster.
